Thanks to everyone for your insights. I ended up removing the gills simply by
removing the screws at the bottom of the gill and the long screws that go through
the gills. Did my painting thing the reinstalled them. All is well and works
fine as before. One thing I did note is about half dozen of the long screws
were significantly worn where they rotate and make contact with the upper
gill hole. They were worn about 50% through due to the rotation (and possibly
lack of lubrication). I brazed each of them then turned down flush so hopefully
that will work for some time to come. I would hate to tackle a problem where
the screw broke in place. Don't know who it could be removed w/o tearing
up the gill.
