Search dogs have detected the body of a missing Indiana pilot in the wrecka
ge of his small airplane=2C which was found Sunday morning =97 more than a
week after the plane dropped off of radar=2C according to authorities.The Y
ak-52 airplane belonging to Glenn Foy=2C 59=2C was found in Boone County at
8:40 a.m. ET by crews with the Indiana wing of the Civil Air Patrol in Boo
ne County=2C said Civil Air Patrol Lt. Col. Tim Turner. The site of the wre
ckage is about 100 miles from Eagle Creek Airport in Indianapolis=2C where
Foy was last seen on April 3=2C Turner said.The aircraft was "impacted into
the ground=2C" and recovery crews have not been able to gain access=2C but
"we were just out there with cadaver dogs and they gave an indication that
there is likely a body in the wreckage" Turner told NBC News from the site
of the crash.Foy was not reported missing until April 6=2C Turner said. Hi
s girlfriend told authorities that it was "not uncommon for him to get in h

I hope your mechanic understands how the pneumatic system works, because if he
does not .... it is going to be pretty much up to you to teach him, or hire someone
who does. It is a "mind set" that when someone hears air hissing from a
gear lever in the cockpit that they immediately assume it must be bad. This
happens a lot ...
Unless a fitting is loose, you will normally never hear air coming out of the actuators.
There is a ring seal in there that can cause that, but by and large
it is the chevron seals that go first and when they do go, they cause an internal
leak and not an external leak that you can hear. Evidence of an internal
leak is air leaking out of the gear handle with the gear either fully up, or
fully down. If there is no air leaking out the gear handle (this being done
on the deck with the aircraft on jacks) then there are no internal leaks. If
you hear air coming out of the handle, read Dennis's instructions on how to narrow
it down to exactly where.
If the crush washers are missing, the system will not pressurize.
If they are the wrong size, they could be leaking.
There are many ways to skin this cat. My PERSONAL way is to take the line off
the snot valve going to the check valves on the firewall, and then with a homemade
adapter fitting, I connect a line from a regulated tank back to the snot
valve. I am now blowing air BACKWARDS towards the compressor. Listen for leaks.
Be aware that there is a check valve in the compressor itself that can get
all gummed up that can also cause leaks. In any case, I inject air backwards
and if I hear a leak, or see "airflow" then I take the Banjo fitting off and
look everything over. Before you do that, order a few sets of new banjo fitting
aluminum crush washers. Also be aware that it is very common for the line
from the compressor to the banjo to crack. I doubt that is the case here.
ANYWAY.... before you do ALL OF THAT, do this. After you finish flying, walk away
from the aircraft for about 15-20 minutes and come back and THEN open the
snot valve. If you get no WHOOSH, then you probably have something leaking in
the above area.
Be careful not to chase Ghosts. If I run my air down to 25 Atmos's or so, it takes
about 10 min or MORE at 85% power to pump it back up, and that is with no
leaks and a new compressor. Add some age to the compressor, and those numbers
increase even further.
But if you can't REACH 50 Atmos with the gear handle up, and putting it in the
center ALLOWS it to reach 50, then yes... you've got a leak. Again, use Dennis
Savarese's procedures.

Update 3 - Flew a form training sortie today after the check valve overhaul, with
gear handle UP it was pumping up super slow in the air, setting gear neutral
and it pumped up to and regulated at 50 but it seemed to take maybe 15 minutes
(took off at about 30-35 Atm after a bunch of taxiing).
Mechanic suspects fwd gear handle (we had no noise from the actuators or a perceptible
leak at the gear handles in the UP position on our gear swings yesterday).
But, looking at the compressor banjo fitting he thought the crush washers
might either be missing or not right size - looked at a spare compressor with
a banjo fitting on it and definitely looks different.
When I pull the snot valve release after shutdown I get a good blow down through
the valve, sounds like other Yak's I have heard - so it seems the compressor
is putting air out, just not sure how much.
Issue seems to be engine running and gear UP - ideas?

He was Glenn Foy. I announced Ryan Patterson, Glenn, and Sean Morrey as the Red
Thunder Formation team on numerous occasions in the Ohio/Indiana region; a great
act. Glenn was a easy going, all-around super guy and first rate pilot. It
looks like he went straight in from the photo. Donna and I are saddened by the
loss of another great friend and fellow pilot.

Subject: | DIFFICULT START -52 |
Background:
Just replaced engine with, as far as we can tell from the Russian logs, an IRAN
engine that has been sitting for 10 years. Initially, very difficult to start,
requiring essentially constant priming to keep it turning. Replaced carburetor
with old one off prior engine I was using. Now runs well but still requires
lots of priming once it fires, for a few seconds.
Have noticed when primer knob turned to left to pressurize system, nothing is showing
on fuel pressure gage. Once started, fuel pressure normal
Thoughts?

Chances are there is nothing wrong with your carburettor. If the engine
was inhibited for storage it is quite likely the carb. was done as well.
There is a specific process in the manual (at least for the Huosai so I
assume also in the M14 manual) to clean the oil out of it. It could take a
very long time to get it operational if that is not done.
Also check the small tube in the throat of the carb. As part of the
storage process it may be capped off with a rubber condom. If so the
diaphragm chamber does not sense atmospheric pressure and the carb. will not
function.
Not being familiar with the Yak 52 I don't know which way it turns for
priming (I would guess to the left). The CJ uses the same primer but is
plumbed to prime from either side since it has a separate emergency pump.
There would be no fuel pressure indication from priming since the fuel goes
directly into the induction system.

Just replaced engine with, as far as we can tell from the Russian logs, an
IRAN engine that has been sitting for 10 years. Initially, very difficult to
start, requiring essentially constant priming to keep it turning. Replaced
carburetor with old one off prior engine I was using. Now runs well but
still requires lots of priming once it fires, for a few seconds.
Have noticed when primer knob turned to left to pressurize system, nothing
is showing on fuel pressure gage. Once started, fuel pressure normal

Thanks again Mark. My mechanic is quite versed in the Yak, the confusion is me
a new operator.
Taking your advice today I merely set UP on the handle and left it during my formation
sortie, it pumped up to 50 and regulated just fine (I didn't time it and
it was a long flight but I noticed it was at 50 during maybe 2nd ops check
so about 20-30 minutes in) - I figure there probably was a leak with the check
valve to snot valve (with compressor going) and I was impatient last time I flew.
Thanks all for the inputs. I am sure there will be other things but I think this
issue may be closed.
