Dennis Savarese" Subject: Yak-List: Severely Worn Yak 52 hidden elevator roller For the Yak 52 owners that are unaware of the hidden elevator roller in the tail cone of the airplane, attached is a photo of a severely worn roller. Most of the rollers are phenolic. This one is metal. The flat spot is caused by the roller binding and not being manually checked for free rotation periodically, then lubricated to prevent binding. When this roller binds up, the cable movement across it is like a sawing motion. Ultimately what can happen is a frayed upper elevator cable. Needless to say, not a good thing. If for any reason you find the hidden elevator roller binding in any way, replace it immediately. Call Jill for the roller. She usually has them in stock. Replacing it is literally a one-handed job. If you don't know where this roller is located, email me and I will send you a photo of the location. Dennis -- A. Mine's in the middle of a condition inspection and the bearing is frozen. No damage to cable evident. Hoping a little Mouse Milk and time will loosen it up. Otherwise, anyone know of a 35 pound midget with six foot long arms? I assume the Russians had a handy supply of them on the production line.... Dennis Savarese" Subject: Re: Yak-List: Severely Worn Yak 52 hidden elevator roller Mark, If it's already frozen, bite the bullet and replace it. I've never found the 35 lb midget with 6 foot arms. The only way I've been able to remove it is to place asmall vice grip on the nut and turn the bolt head with a 1/4 drive 8mm socket and ratchet. Just sheer the cotter pinand push it out of the bolt once it is removed. When reinstalling, be sure the guard is clear of the cable when tightening the nut/bolt. This is very important so as not to cause the cable to rub on the guard. You'll need a 1.6 mm cotter pin or a metric lock nutto replace the castellatednut. Dennis A. There is a guide that fits on that pulley too. If the bearing becomes frozen the guide can saw on the upper elevator cable too.
