    > Doug, > I spend time looking at the Gill Shutters the other day to better understand the mechanism. This is the best I can describe, the shutters themselves (almost all of them have some play but probably typical as the slots dont appear to be worn), the nose case studs appear to be fine, the center ring has some play/movement in it. Heres the scenario, during flight with the shutters closed about halfway the air pressure tends to push them closed further. Im wondering if it has to do with the teleflex cable or spring tension on the knob in the cockpit then the actual shutters???? Hi Brett, I have replaced the shutters before due to excessive play - in my case and probably most others it is worn guides (part of each shutter) and the pins that ride in them. I know of some down under that have built these areas back up with welds and grinded back to shape! (Don't bother) However the air pushing your shutters closed is probably due to the handle in the cockpit having worn out 'lobes'. Unscrew the handle in your cockpit and you will see what I mean. As far as I can you have to replace the whole rotary-into-linear-motion thingy behind the dash. But first, just unscrew the handle put a rubber grommet between the two lobe faces and it may provide enough friction to stop the handle rotating in flight. Depends on how worn they are. Roger and all, It never ceases to amaze me that many folks refuse to use the Yak list for it's intended purpose and insist on reinventing the wheel themselves. It's been several years ago but I discovered that McFarlane will build up the swaged control cables. That said, they cannot thread the ends because they do not have metric dies, I did and did not find threading the ends a problem. The outer copper sheath is available at any good hdw store. http://www.mcfarlane-aviation.com/Products/?CategoryID=219& Doug On Mon, May 11, 2015 at 8:15 PM, Roger Kemp <f16viperdoc@me.com> wrote: > > Shack! Won't hurt a thing. Let's say you had recently changed the oil and switched to the Philips 25W- 60 and you were at an airshow or fly-in that did not have anything other th an Aeroshell 100 and you needed a quart or two of oil.=C2- Would you add 1 or 2 qts of the Aeroshell 100 or go without it? I think you'd add it.=C2- I certainly would.Dennis From: Jon Blake <jblake207@comcast.net> To: yak-list@matronics.com Sent: Tuesday, May 12, 2015 11:31 AM Subject: Re: Yak-List: Motor oil OK, you've convinced me to switch. Me personally I do not like to 25w60 and only use 100 or 120. I have found that using 25w60 in my engine I get oil leaks. I know that sounds sort of silly but I do. Having said that I operate mostly (99%) of the time in a Florida climatic condition. In the winter months I use 100. Just recently the foundation I fly the B24 for has gone from multi grade to straight 100 w. When you are talking gallons the $$$$ mount. Mixing. You can mix grades in a pinch. I have put 25w60 in my tank when t he FBO didn't have any 100 or 120. Just don't make it a habit. The real N o/No is if you are using a mineral oil for normal operations and mix in a d etergent oil SEA 100 or 120. IF you are using a detergent oil for normal o perations you can mix in a quart or two of a mineral oil if that is all a F BO has to keep you going. Do not however make a habit of it. Change your oil often. With a 10 micro filter, I change mine between 40 an d 50 hours. That may seem long to some, but I find the oil surprising clea n even at those times. A pre-oiler is the best investment. I am not an expert on engine lubrication, and merely go on experience and a dvice from old timers, so I do respect differences of opinions here. I als o note that "hap" is some times the epitome of success. Jon, Before you switch, keep in mind we live in the tropics and operate our birds mostly in very hot weather. I ran the Phillips in my previous CJ And now run Aeroshell in the new one. I've found that I have much less oil accumulation in my lower cylinders with the Aeroshell. Obviously this is purely anecdotal, since there are many other factors at play, but you have to ask yourself, do you need the multi weight capabilities based on the average temps you fly in? The same capabilities that allow the oil to flow in freezing temps, allow it to flow past your rings in a 90 degree hangar. Just a thought.
