It's been a while since I've had to purchase any. What kind of grease do
most folks use on the CJ's?
Thanks

I use high temp red grease for my wheel bearings, the rest of the airframe
gets
Aeroshell No. 6 from my grease gun.

I use Aeroshell #5 almost everywhere, certainly in all my landing gear zerk
fittings.
I believe the (crappy) paint shop used Aeroshell #6 for my flight control's
small bearings, when they had them disassembled/off for paint.

thanks for the replies. Tom are all your cylinders LOP? Curious as to how even
the mixture distribution is on the HS6

Subject: | Overhauled engine preservation |
Hi all, I have an overhauled HS6 from China in a crate. I received it maybe 9 months
ago, and it won't need to go into the aircraft for another year or two.
I understand the factory does some pickling of their own when these engines are
overhauled, but:
1) how good is the factory pickling? The book calls for pushing oil through the
air compressor, carburettor, oil and fuel pumps, as well as No.257 anti-rust
grease in the cylinders, and filling the case fully with No.257 grease.
Our last engine we put in is still going strong but it just had what looked like
engine oil in it when we uncrated it.
Would the Phillips Anti-Rust 20W-50 do the job in preserving the bottom and top
ends rather than whatever No.257 anti-rust grease is?
2) if I were to re-do the preservation job, what would be the best way to go about
it?
Obviously it'd be nice to trust the factory had done the right job but then for
the price of these motors these days seems no harm in checking...

Cannot say for sure as I only have one channel EGT. But it runs smooth and as
I keep going lean of peak the power just drops off never any roughness.
Another Cj-6 that I fly has a 9 Ch. EGT on a M14 with throttle body fuel injection
and all 9 cyl stay very even and you can lean to cut off with no roughness.

Hi Richard, you mention there is no three blade (aerobatic) propeller that would
fit onto the spine shaft of M14B, I have 2 of the 3 JL2A propellers in existence,
which fit onto the HS6 - I'm going to assume it's the same spline as the
M14B?
We have investigated getting another JL2A for someone else in Australia but the
factory only ever made 3, apparently.
However, they did mention that if we ordered five (5!) that they would be willing
to build more.
Price at a guess would be around US$12k each including backing plate and spinner.
Not sure of the cost of a M14P gearbox + install but thought it may be an option
for your customers with the B engines.
If someone knew the genesis of the JL2A I'd love to know! Was it to fit on the
HS6D engine of around 400hp? But then why the splined shaft.. or is that what
the JL2B was for (flange fitting).
Cheers
Anatole

Yes, I have heard of the prop and thought someone might mention it! This was
a reason that I specifically mentioned "aerobatic" since I understand it to
be really quite heavy, and probably not suitable for anything more than
gentle aerobatics. I have been told that the splined shaft on the AI 14 and
HS-6 engines it is not a strong as the shaft on the M 14 P.

I thought that's why you put 'aerobatic' there! Yes, whole set up weighs nearly
50kg I think, from memory.
Still, if anyone knows of an operator that wants a 3 blade prop for CJs and can
still be flown as non-experimental (insert your country's term) then please pm
me.
(In Oz we are in Limited category for fare paying passengers, must have factory
built / approved bits)
