I have had the same problem myself. New coils fixed the problem. Trying to heat the engine in excess of red line on the ground to replicate the problem is a really bad idea. Better to change both coils and not trash your engine trying to troubleshoot which coil is breaking down. Chances are that if one is playing up, then the next won't be far behind. Cheers Egon. In addition to following all of the good recommendations in tracing the roughness problem, I suggest using the incident as a reminder to check and clean the fine fuel filter (if installed). This solved a rough-running problem in my 52W years ago. Mike Roehr

Of course I know nothing of your fuel filter problem, but I would be fairly confident that a shortage of fuel, which presumably is what happened, would cause a consistent rough running problem. However, with a failing magneto coil, what makes it difficult to solve is, quite simply, that it is inconsistent and will only occur at certain times, and typically when the engine is hot. Subject: Oktoberfest Clinic
Mark your calendars, I am organizing a formation clinic at Lakeland-Linder for Thursday, October 1st through Sunday October 4th. There will be a Thursday afternoon ground school and newbie training, FPR flights, check rides as well as something special. Drawing on his years of experience at the big shows, Pappy is putting together a seminar for well experienced Lead Pilots who desire to lead mass formations. This will be augmented by airshow practice sessions in two 30 minute sessions at Lakeland in closed airspace. Not often do opportunities like this come along to practice in sterile airspace at one of the main venues for big Warbird shows. As most folks have already heard, our Friendly Aviation Authority is considering a rule that Lead pilots for Mass Formations have previous experience with training. Rumor has it that a new rule will be out in Fall this year. In all cases, Red Stars need to out in front of whatever is coming. In addition; the theme, banquet and libations will be "seasonal". Stay tuned to the RPA web site. Craig Payne
