Went flying yesterday in my CJ and my lower back started to act up
after an hour.
I was wondering if anyone has come up with a supportive backpad for
the seat. I am tall (Over 6') so can't afford to be moved closer to the
pedals. Does the existing backpad serve any purpose? Would neoprene or a
dense foam with a lumbar support work? Are there any stretches that I could
do prior to flying that would mitigate the discomfort?
(Searched the archives to no avail)
Thanks,

I don=99t use a back pad at all but use the lumbar bladder on my
Butler Parachute. Also recommend the rudder peddle extension mode from
Barry Handcock to help with the situation.

Philip,
There are none that I am aware of. Google McKenzie exercises for the lumbar s
pine (include the cervical spine exercises in your search also). Core streng
thening exercises such as abdominal crunches and push-ups help to strengthen
the obliques, psoas, and spinal erector muscles ( to name a few). Weight tr
aining also helps to strengthen the core as well as improve G tolerance. Avo
id the military press if you have degenerative lumbar spine disease and cerv
ical spine for that matter. The over head lift loads up the discs farther co
mpressing them pinching the nerve roots in the foramina. I will not get into
the mechanical and chemical irritation that occurs in the degenerative spin
e.

I,ve used one for years. Just a little arc shaped pad that fits in the
lower back portion btwn the chute and seat. I got mine at Oregon Aero
at OSH.
Works great on those long trips.
Strong also make on to fit on their parachutes (which I bought). Not as
big but also does a good job. I like my OA pad the best.
Good Luck.

Phil,
You may want to choose the cheapest and easiest remedy(?) first.

I had the cable snap just after take off ( a quick squeeze to stop the wheels spinning).
luckily I had a (non-pilot) passenger in the back and with a bit of
team work we taxied off the runway with only one pirouette!
