Steve, I should have said when you blow thru the vent tube on the lower
wing, make sure it is very low 10psi max or less!!! In addition, I would
agree with Doug Sapps comments regarding finding a good CJ/ YAK mechanic to
go thru the airplane with you or someone that is real familiar with it.

Doug,
I take no offense and you are correct. Like I said earlier, the airplane
has been sitting a few years and is out of condition inspection. I've
been asking around and there doesn't appear to be any CJ/Yak experts in
the Chicago area. Lynn Hadler at Lake-in-the-Hills who used to take care
of it retired last year and apparently moved to Tennesee. Dave Monroe
and the Aerostar guys are training another guy on their airplanes to do
their maintenance but he hasn't been around any CJ's. This side of
offering you an airline ticket out to Chicago to look over my airplane,
I have to investigate other options.
That being said, the CJ is is one of several airplanes we have built,
restored and operate, ranging from gliders to aerobatic aircraft to
other warbirds. I realize that that none of them is a CJ and I agree
with your suggestion top have an experienced CJ guy to help out but I
haven't had much luck there. I do have some former CJ owners helping out
and the airplane doesn't look that complicated, just a little
idiosyncratic. I was hoping to tap into all the experience and expertise
on this forum to at least get it ferriable or round up enough advice and
information to work with the local guys to do it here.
Are there any maintenance manuals or condition inspection guides that I
may purchase or download? I do have a set of the blue parts books that
came with the airplanes.
ANY advice is appreciated.
Sincerely,
Steve Jones

Steve,
Absolutely no disrespect meant but your line of questions leads me to
guess that your CJ is out of conditional (annual). If this is the fact
I would highly recommend that you hire a competent CJ mechanic and look
over his shoulder while he does the required inspection. He will have
the knowledge and the proper tools to do the job. I honestly believe
that doing this will save you money and heart ache (not to mention
wallet ache) in the long run.

Gents,
I have what I would describe as "fine" vibration when the nose wheel touches down
or during acceleration for takeoff.
My thought is the usual suspects.
1. out of balance nose tire/wheel.
2. bad nose wheel bearing/or loose
3. shimmy damper.
Anyone have anything else I might need to look at? Going to start from the bottom
and work up.
Thanks,
Keith

I happened to catch some of the comments on the fuel vent but not all. It's a really
great place for insects to go live. Many people drill a hole(s) through
the tip of the vent and slip a piece of thin safety wire thru to make it a little
harder for certain insects to get in there.
Sorry if that's been mentioned already...

Check the guys a finefield [sp?} aviation at lake in the hills. They
worked on my Yak-52 a few years back (15+) and were great guys. They
probably don=99t know the CJ, but could work on things with help
from remote experts. They do have round engine experience.

Actually there is supposed to be a small screen cap over the vent tube. It
is normally held in place by safety wire or a cotter pin.

Chinese tire & wheel? If so, replace with a Cleveland wheel and an American
tire. Doug Sapp has the appropriate spacers for the axle.
