I agree here. I chased around intermittent but persistent missing and
such. On the way to OSH one year, I had to divert into Americus, GA. wher
e a
young greasy faced kid with a deep southern drawl, informed me that my
ignition wires were breaking down. I went to the auto conversion and have
had
no problems with that part of the system. Now it seem that coils are my
first suspicion after plugs. The original harness though well built and
state of the art for time, the insulation will brake down over time. It
is a
bitch to change out one or two of those wires though that ring believe me
.
BTW I just had a coil go bad while sitting on the shelf! I just put a ma
g
back on the engine, that had been put away running perfectly when I put it
on the shelf. After a lot of trouble shooting, it could only be the coil
.
I borrowed a mag, and problem solved - for a while (I have to give it
back). This is the first time I've had this happened to me, but it makes
sense. Aging does effect materials just takes a little longer than opera
tional
usage.
BTW OSH was a really big this year. A lot of new stuff being presented,
beautiful airplane no matter what your sandra. Workmen ship to the point
of unbelievable. 2! yes 2 ! DH Mosquitoes. And it is something to see
a
B-52, B-29, B-17 and a Aevro Lancaster sitting side by side. Yes the
Harrier did hover (2 of them at the same time) and the F-22 did one of it
s
vertical flat turn spins, recover and blast off level near Mach. (SH! man
!) The
Warbird area was full. The T-34s are back, and the T-6 group is still
strong as hell (30+). There 18 CJs and Yaks there and RPA flew every day
but
one. I can say that I walk the entire length - ultra lights to the "Nort
h
Forty" ( Would you believe I counted no less 40 Aerocoups!). And the
people you meet. A group of Brazilian showed up (the gal with them a #10
and a
captain on a corporate jet no less.) and they owned the only 2 Yak-52 in
Brazil. They were full of questions and those who were bilingual were bu
sy
busy. We had some good giggles.
I had a great time. I recommend every one go - geees at least once. But
its nice to be home

Nigel,
I am just parachuting into this discussion, so I may not be clear as to
your challenge, I had intermittent running problems years ago. I really
struggled with it. I came to dislike the aircraft for a while as it the
engine
would gallup and chuff and shake the cowl. In flight.. iIntermittently.
Sometimes occasionally, sometimes periodically. I tried a bunch of things
but what did the trick was to discard the Russian ignition wire ring and
replace it with freestanding wires. It seems that there were short in
the
insulated shielded wires in the ring and the real tell was when I figured
out
that the problem was happening at altitudes of 5-7k and above
(approximately) shorting became more prevalent as the shielding and cond
uctivity
changes with altitude.
If you=99ve already done that then never mind! ;-)
My $.02 Cheers!

Subject: Yak-List: M14P mag coils (YAk52)
Jill/All,
Recent threads on the subject of mag problems and total cuts in flights
etc. suggest changing the mag coil cures the problem.
I=99ve recently changed one on my M14P Yak52, only to be presented
with the
same problem again on the replaced coil. (Everything else has been checke
d
out).
Discussions with various people seem to point to it being an =9Dage
=9D
breakdown problem with the coils rather than a =9Camount of use
=9D problem.
So, the question is, does anyone have a supply of KNOWN GOOD coils that
can be used as a replacement?
If anyone DOES, can they let me know price including shipping to the UK?
Or, and alternative source of supply (Termikas tell me =9Cnot ava
ilable=9D
and =9Cunable to overhaul=9D).
Thanks in advance everyone

You have to be very specific on tests: Problems in the ht leads, spark plugs etc.
are normally not heat related so you should find them by the mag checks before
takeoff. Problems with coils are definitely temperature (and age) related
and you will not detect that by mag checks but only after minimum half an hour
in the air. So for checking the coil you have to use an oven to see for yourself
- worked each time I changed coils hoping for a good one.
Problems with leads or plugs should not be so dramatic in the air like cut-outs
due to a faulty coil, this feels quite different.
