Greetings all. I am currently in the market for a Yak-52 or CJ-6a, and afte
r talking to the very helpful Jerry at Wild Blue Aviation, I decided to fol
low his suggestion and ask on the list if there is anyone in the mid-south
who has either aircraft that I might try sitting in? I am currently based a
t KASG (Springdale, Ar) and can fly pretty much anywhere in a 300 mile radi
us in a morning. I currently have ~1500 hrs in a Grumman Cheetah, and about
30 hours in various other aircraft. Jerry's thought was that I might find
the Yak cockpit a bit tight (I wear a 52R jacket). So I thought I would try
finding one of each to try on. Sitting in a Mooney back when I bought the
Cheetah was good for immediately knowing that a Mooney wasn't the aircraft
for me (and 3 visits to the Chiropractor). If the Yak cockpit is too tight
, that stops a whole branch of work off the bat.

a nod to objectivity, suggest you purchase the Nanchang CJ-6A Buyer's Guide
found on the RPA's web site store. Go to flyredstar.org click on the store a
nd then find Manuals.

Scott:
Saw your post on the Yak List pertaining to CJ versus Yak 52. I tried to re
spond directly to you, but my email was rejected.
I was in the same position a few years ago. I even included a Yak 18T on my
shopping list.
I am 6'4" and 275 lbs.... a lot of pilot to fit into a small cockpit that w
as originally designed for a smaller and younger individual. Comfort really
influenced my decision.
I chose a CJ6 and have never questioned my decision. Why? The cockpit is si
mply larger. If you exceed the 85 percentile man profile, you will still ne
ed to add the Malcolm hood-type canopy (ies) for extra head clearance (espe
cially with a helmet or headset) and the rudder pedal extensions for extra
leg room. Both are well worth the investment and have made flying a lot eas
ier and more comfortable.
My only concern with the CJ is the landing gear lever. In the down position
, I need to make sure my left leg does not bump up against it. Which, in tu
rn, reduces the amount of side movement for the control stick. Not that cri
tical unless you have a stiff left crosswind. In those instances, I just a
llow for it.
I have approximately 1000 hours in a 1974 Grumman AA-1B which I bought whil
e I was still in college. The Grumman is a lot of fun to fly, but the CJ is
a lot easier to fly. And, consistently make smooth landings.

I have a great magazine article from the UK magazine Flyer, not that I'm
biased, comparing the CJ and the Yak. It's from 96 so the costs per hour
are a little out of date!
It's too large to post on the Yak List (7mb) but if anyone wants a copy I'd
