It is interesting that someone should bring up the topic of the 18 T. I hav
e been closely involved with these aircraft since, with Russian friends, we
re-established production at the Smolensk factory in the early 90s, and si
nce then have been responsible for selling a large proportion of those that
are now in the West.
What is often not realised is how much an 18 T can be improved from the sto
ck specification. Particular examples are that almost 250 pounds can be re
moved from the airframe by deleting the very heavy "airline-style" electric
al system; instrument and avionics; additional long-range integral wing tan
ks gives a good five hours endurance; a combination of a 400 hp engine and
three blade MT propeller radically improves performance; it is relatively e
asy to make a much quieter cabin with better sound-proofing; for those inte
rested in aerobatics, it is quite simple to convert the airframe to a full
inverted system (of course the engine already is).
I built up one as a demonstrator, and it would cruise, at altitude, a bit o
ver 160 knots (although 140 was a lot more economical); two up and with lig
ht fuel would climb at almost 2000 feet a minute; would still be climbing a
t 18,000 feet; would operate comfortably out of 400 yards and be able to pu
sh up to an outside loop! And, of course, an absolute delight to fly.

Justin,
Every one on this list knows me. And they know I'm prejudice as hell about
the two airplanes. As "JB" notes -its what your mission is that's going t
o be your bottom line (along with the price). However having flown most li
kely over a 100 flights in the back seat of Yaks - either as formation inst
ructor/check pilot, been though acrobatics in both, I prefer the CJ-6 and I
've owned mind over 21 years. Although the CJ is not thought of a acrobatic
airplane, I've seen it do just about any maneuver a Yak can do. It's more
forgiving. YES, it has limits (tail slides for one) but if your new to acr
obatics - its a better airplane to start in. XC? Yep in a Yak you gota lan
d every hour & a half. In my CJ I have to land every 2 hours. You see my
personal bladder is only worth 2 hours - however I still have over an hour
of reserve fuel onboard.
For lots of XC stuff, its very easy to install an auto pilot in a CJ (hell
anyone can fly straight & level -let "George" do it.) but it'd play hell to
find the space to put one in a Yak. (I've not heard of it anyway) IOW th
e CJ has airframe to grow into. In a Yak you don't dare let FOD, any FOD,
get toward the tail.
There others on this list who will swear to God the great attributes of th
e Yak, and I will pick a fight with them because in the end it really depen
ds on what you want. I had a very dear friend (and former long time Yak-52
owner) confess to me he wish he had bought a CJ first. So for straight acr
obatic and nothing else go Yak. Better all around airplane? go to the CJ.
BTW a real sleeper left out of this is the Yak 18T. I've seen this airplan
e put on a very impressive low altitude routine and than after the show, th
e pilot load up a bunch of his & his wife's personal stuff and head for hom
e. Not many around, but a neat airplane.

My only concern with the CJ is the landing gear lever. In the down position

I have approximately 1000 hours in a 1974 Grumman AA-1B which I bought whil

Hope this helps. Any other questions, please feel free to call or email.

That was about 10 years ago, and the plane is now adored by its Austrian ow

But, I do have a stalled 18 T project with Termikas which would be about $1
40,000 with new 430 HP engine; new MT prop; entire aircraft zero-timed; ver

That's what I did choose to fly now. My recent acquisition, the Yak18T.
It has room for 4 and Fully aerobatic,
+6 -3 1/2. 5 hours + range, for cross countries. Big luggage compartment a
nd like the CJ and the 52, built like a tank. It also can fly without the d
oors on ( so Blitz, you can pee out while flying :-)
You'll be seeing it in the near future at the All Red Star gatherings.
I really love Natasha.
"Pipes".

Subject: | Re: Yak-List Digest: 13 Msgs - 09/04/15 |
That's what I did choose to fly now. My recent acquisition, the Yak18T.
It has room for 4 and Fully aerobatic,
+6 -3 1/2. 5 hours + range, for cross countries. Big luggage compartment a
nd like the CJ and the 52, built like a tank. It also can fly without the d
oors on ( so Blitz, you can pee out while flying :-)
You'll be seeing it in the near future at the All Red Star gatherings.
I really love Natasha.
"Pipes".

"That's what I did choose to fly now.
"Pipes". "
Pipes, I'm embarrassed to confess that I'm ill-equipped to pee out an open d
oor. You, it seems, would require a call sign change to "Long Dong." =F0=9F=98
