Hi George,
Very interesting story. How does it fly in formation when compair with
Yak/Nanchang?
What is its real world cruise speed and fuel burn?
Thanks and Happy New Year!
Robin

Maybe some listers would like to hear the story of how the IAR's got
here. It is a tale of happenstance and luck.
I remember my first view of the IAR 823. I was in Romania meeting
with Aerostar about further contracts for Yak52TW and Motorstar about M14P
engines. My friends in Motorstar said there may be some Lycoming engines
available for sale soon and was I interested. I said yes, and we drove 2
hrs. to Focsani air base.
There we saw in the distance a field of IAR823 aircraft and I was
told they were to be scrapped and perhaps we could buy engines. We were not
allowed on the base to see them close up. I asked if I could buy the
airplanes as is. After some months of discussions, I contracted for 38
aircraft. I did not have the money so I presold some of the aircraft to get
the funds for the contract.
I became worried that after paying for them, some Romanian Official
would stop the deal, so the day I paid contract, I had 22 containers
arranged and 3 crews to make the special shipping frames, disassemble and
pack them. They were all disassembled, packed 2 to a container gone within
a
week. They also had to remove the military equipment so we could import
them as "Civil" aircraft.
34 were imported to the U.S. and 4 went to Hungary. The last day, my
guys called and said there were some spares for sale, so I bought them
sight
unseen and two more containers were loaded with the spares.
There were some others that came from the Romanian Air clubs
imported as well. I also later bought the last 6 aircraft from the Romanian
Air clubs as well.

Well I am short so fitting into either is not issue. Need something in budget range
under 100K that works for me. One guy showed me a nice Yak 52TW but wants
140K! I can buy a T-6 or T34 for that price range.

You can but a 225 hp T-34 in that range but not a big engine 34 (285 - 310 h
p).
The 225 hp T-34 is equivalent performance to the 285 hp CJ-6.
$140k is also in the big engine CJ-6 realm (probably upper end).

Good techique from Bill, but I'd offer you this. If you are looking for the perfect
"anything" in the aerobatic world..... get a good coach. It is money spent
that you will never regret.
In all things Russian, my favorite person is Sergei Boriak.
Best of luck,
Mark
p.s. Not saying you will do it, but botched hammerheads are the perfect way to
introduce you to an inverted spin. If you have already mastered all the possible
spins in the 55, once again the key is an outside observer talking to you
and telling you what you are doing wrong... or right!

I don't know about the Yak 55 but the Yak 52 is 82% and full throttle entry speed
300 clicks or better pull to straight up with 4 1/2 - 5 G you can cheat and
use the AH at 50 clicks kick FULL right rudder as rotation starts slight forward
and to the left stick when the nose is pointed to the ground center controls.
That's how I do it in MY Yak 52

Well I have two T-34 confirmed kills (They were hunting me). Plus a very public
confirmed on a Yak-52 (the wingman of an attacking CJ). Another kill on a
CJ being flown by a Navy fighter pilot (he started it) . And of course a forgettable
number of ER trainers (un be known est to them).
I have to admit, I had my tail dusted, by an RV-8 a month ago. But the pilot was
definitely top of the line.

I love this bickering about airplanes!!! For those guys who learn to fly in the
T-34 - - - well you know the old saying "No matter how ugly, your first lover
is always the one you thought the most beautiful". Its' cockpit is to big.
You tend to rattle around in it. To this day I love the Champ. ALL VERSION of
it. And I love the B-24 and think the B-17 over rated. And I love the Storch!
Shit I just don't enough time for all the airplanes I love. I don't love
a 51. I don't love the B25, - - - to hard to pull the props though. I loved
the 777 and 747SP. I didn't love the 767-100 (piece of crap), but her big
sister 767-300 was the one airplane I could grease on no matter what! I love
the 747-400- - - -had great bunks! I always wanted to fly a Connie, and a DC6.
I got to familiar with a DC-3, but a Loadmaster would be interesting.
Well here is to a great New Year fellow listers. May your airplane dreams come
true.
"Oh give me a CJ-6 A.
And send me into the fray
With guns and panache
I'll kick any ass!
Yes give me a CJ-6 A "
