Just back from a long business trip to Switzerland and recovering from the cold
bug that I caught on the flight back home. All good things. I think that either
a CJ or a Yak 52 with long range tanks and updated avionics would be the right
ticket for me. Another option that could work out well for me is to buy into
an existing partnership in a Yak or CJ and then buy a second plane for long
cross country trips like a Bonanza or Mooney. Then I'd have the best of both
worlds.
I checked T-34 and AT-6 prices and they are twice as much as CJ and Yak for one
in decent condition. There are some T-34 for under 200K but most need a lot of
work.

Paul is an acknowledged guru of aeronautics, His library on the subject
right there on the airport is a treasure trove. His firm does testing for
Boeing.
Q: Who came up with the positioning?
A: Paul does. He has laser cut templates for placing the vortex generators.
Positioning is based on wind tunnel model testing. VG's are placed at 10%
chord with the template. I flew the Yak to his establishment on the airport
and his staff positioned and applied the VG's.
Q: Do they make a difference?
A: Yes, approximately 10% reduction in stall speed. Book value straight and
level stall in the Yak 55m is 70 mph. I checked that immediately before
installation on the VG's.
Checked again immediately after the installation of VG's and at straight and
level was 61 mph. OK, so what you may ask?
A: Book value touchdown speed in the Yak is 80 mph 55M is in 3 point
attitude. Any slower will have the tailwheel touch first with a bounce to
mains. Not good. So the 61 mph stall speed doesn't help with slower
landings. But I haven't noticed the VG's makes them any worse if you
maintain the same landing attitude as without the VGs..
The big advantage is at the top of humpty bumps and loops, etc., where
speed is slow. It will hold on for longer before buffet and reattach quicker
on recovery. It means more time on the vertical which is a big help in
competition aerobatics for energy and altitude management. The Yak 55M
scrubs of airspeed in high speed pulls real quick so the more you can wring
out on the vertical the better. It becomes a factor to some extent in
Intermediate and big time in Advanced.
Snap rolls are interesting. Higher G loading to get into the snap at a given
airspeed but there is a cleaner recovery. The airflow attaches more quickly
which results in a cleaner exit (or a re-attach before anticipated). If you
are used to carrying stick forward per Russian mantra to accelerate the snap
and you get an earlier than anticipated reattached, you'll be in a negative
snap quicker than the blink of an eye.
Bud Granley, the well known airshow maestro, flies a wonderful routine in
his Yak 55M with his son Ross in a Yak 18. He put me onto the VGs. The way
he can tumble and fly the Yak at slow speed is magical.
