With respect, Dan's tips for starting a Yak could be a bit confusing since:
*For some extraordinary reason the "left" and "right" positions on the
primer are not uniform amongst all aircraft! You therefore need to be
specific and refer to "cylinder" in which you are pumping fuel directly into
the cylinders and have a real risk of over priming, and indeed
hydraulic-lock, and "system" where you are pumping fuel into the carburettor
and you can pump as much as you like since excess will return to the tank.
*He mentioned "clean oil valve" - presumably meaning a manifold oil drain
system, but this could be confusing to those owners who don't have such
systems fitted to the aircraft
*Surely the "shower of sparks" is connected directly to the starter button,
and as soon as it is released, will stop working. So no need to turn it off?

Dan,When it's colder outside, try puttiing in 4-5 shots of prime (cylinder
side) then try opening the throttle a bit more before you hit the start but
ton.=C2-=C2- Instead of vigorously moving the throttle, try injecting a
nother shot of prime into the cylinders to keep it running when it's colder

I have owned my -55M for 5 months now and had great difficulty starting her
until Sergei Boriak took me aside and gave me the following tip:
Pull 15 blades through with the clean oil valve open.
Prime to the right side just 3 strokes.
Pull 5 blades through and close the valve.
Prime the right side 3 times, turn on the switches and prime the left side
one stroke.
With the throttle just barely cracked open engage the start button.
At the first sound of combustion , switch the mag to 1.
The engine will purr to life with no smoke, noise or fanfare.
Switch the mag to both and turn the shower of sparks off.
Simple as that. On warm days, 55 and warmer I have in excess of 60 successf
ul starts on the first try.
On a day when the outside temp is 55' or less I find I need to prime 4-5 st
rokes just before engaging the start button then cycle the throttle vigorou
sly once it catches to keep it running.
Works every time.

Can someone please confirm whether the Housai primes into the supercharger
and not directly to the cylinders as I'm remembering.

Yes, it does(into the supercharger). The same way the M14 does.
Ernie, the next time we're at your hangar together, I'll show you the
route of the primer line coming off the firewallthat primes the
"cylinder" side.

It goes right in behind the #9 cylinder. If you leave the primer unlocked
or up, it will flood that (#9) and it will not fire. Same with the M-14.

Dan,
When it's colder outside, try puttiing in 4-5 shots of prime (cylinder
side) then try opening the throttle a bit more before you hit the start
button. Instead of vigorously moving the throttle, try injecting another shot
of prime into the cylinders to keep it running when it's colder.

I have owned my -55M for 5 months now and had great difficulty starting
her until Sergei Boriak took me aside and gave me the following tip:
Pull 15 blades through with the clean oil valve open.
Prime to the right side just 3 strokes.
Pull 5 blades through and close the valve.
Prime the right side 3 times, turn on the switches and prime the left side
one stroke.
With the throttle just barely cracked open engage the start button.
At the first sound of combustion , switch the mag to 1.
The engine will purr to life with no smoke, noise or fanfare.
Switch the mag to both and turn the shower of sparks off.
Simple as that. On warm days, 55 and warmer I have in excess of 60
successful starts on the first try.
On a day when the outside temp is 55' or less I find I need to prime 4-5
strokes just before engaging the start button then cycle the throttle
vigorously once it catches to keep it running.
Works every time.

How about some suggestions from folks about starting their aircraft
without d
epleting the on-board air. Starting the 55 has been a challenge.
Thank you!

That=99s correct Ernie.
The Huosai, M14 and (as far as I know) all other variants of the
Ivchenko engines inject primer fuel into the blower case.
The P&W R985 and R1340 go directly to the 5 upper cylinders.
