    From: Craig Payne <yakman285@gmail.com>
I did an article on the Start Valve in the Red Alert a few years back. Archive copies are available on the RedStar web site. Basically, a common problem is rust and "snot" in the air system. Rust is from the input side. On the Nanchang, the Input side is mounted down, where water tends to gather where the steel parts are. Rust is indicated by a brownish stain on the firewall near the exhaust holes in the middle. During the condition inspection, I remove the input B-nut and squirt some WD-40 into the line and re-attach the nut. Eventually, disassembly and cleaning and replacement of O-rings is called for. By keeping a spare, I always have one ready to go. I believe Doug stocks some parts for it but my memory fails in my "golden years". Generally the solenoid top half is OK. Low air pressure and and a weak battery can also cause the "whooshing" sound. One way to test when it fails to start from the cockpit is to get out and "pop" the lever. Mags OFF of course and stand clear of the prop. Craig Payne

Yes, that was a great article Craig.=C2- Right on the money. In the interest of safety, I would point out one more thing for the Yak 52 owners.=C2- Remember, we start the Yak 52 with the mag switch off (as Cra ig mentions for the CJ in his posting).=C2- So before you attempt to use the little lever on the side of the air start valve to "test" it on the Yak 52, please be absolutely certain you have the BATTERY and IGNITION switche s turned OFF, or the engine may fire via the starting coil/shower of sparks . =C2- Dennis From: Craig Payne <yakman285@gmail.com> To: yak-list <yak-list@matronics.com> Sent: Friday, March 25, 2016 6:52 AM Subject: Yak-List: Start Valve woes I did an article on the Start Valve in the Red Alert a few years back. I have had little if any oil discharge from the breather hose forward of my tailwheel the past dozen flights. Flying IAC intermediate sequences has always left oil on the area behind the hose outlet. Has anyone else experienced a blocked hose? Is it a problem? What's your oil level before the flight? Anything over 11 liters tends to be dumped over the side during. Assuming no one dropped the caps off quart bottles of oil into the tank. Are these available? I have now uploaded my Autocad drawings of the Exhaust/intake pin wrench, the intake pipe castle nut wrench, and the V-530 propeller hub nut wrench. The are in the Tool Kit Folder of the Shared google Drive: M14-P <https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_E0KXhypQtgZnFPZmZGRVU1cVU> I simply haven't had time to manufacture these tool kits any more and there's no sense in letting this work go to waste. Enjoy, Cliff
