Could those that use the stop plug technique please illuminate others on the method?
I get it for direct drive engines but not so much for our geared variety..
tried using it stop to stop degree of rotation divided by two, then added to
initial prop angle value but answer was no where near TDC!

Try this.=C2-=C2- First, bring the #4 cylinder up on the compression st
roke (you can feel the pressure push your finger off the spark plug hole.
=C2- Next, insert the stop plug.=C2- Continue to rotate the prop in the
same direction until the piston gently touches the stop plug.=C2-=C2-
Now zero your degree tool, whether it's the cone type disk or the digital p
rotractor.=C2- Rotate the prop in the opposite direction just enough to b
ack the piston away from the stop plug.=C2- Remove the stop plug.=C2- N
ext, rotate the prop past the TDC point far enough to enable you to insert
the stop plug again without it hitting the top of the piston. ie: reinstall
the stop plug.=C2- Then rotate the prop backwards until the piston once
again touches the stop plug.=C2- Read the number of degrees on the timing
disk or digital protractor.=C2- Divide the number of degrees by 2.=C2-
Remove the stop plug.=C2- Continue to rotate the prop backwards until yo
u reach the number of degrees you arrived at when you divided the total num
ber of degrees by 2.=C2- This should put the piston directly at TDC.
Hope this helps.Dennis

I have one of the TDC tools as shown on top. The guy that made them was from San
Diego and used to be on eBay under the name, RUSSIANRADIAL. He was somewhat
of an eccentric individual and kind of difficult to deal with. I have not seen
him list anything for sale for quite a few years now. The instrument is quite
accurate when used in conjunction with a digital level.
Regards,
Ray

No, but I have had an infinite amount of assists from the gent free of charge.
Reasonable .... no, actually better than fair prices on OEM parts that were in
perfect condition, rebuilds of check valves and other parts that all worked
perfectly, and support for any and everything to do with Russian airplanes and
engines. I could go on and on. One of the most knowledgeable and honest people
I know.
Hope this helps.

Hi Dennis,When turning the prop backwards, do you account for any gear back
lash error, or is the error too small to be a factor? Thanks,Robin

CO2 is probably not a good idea because any moisture in your system will
cause carbonic acid to form and corrode the system piping and valves.
