Good Morning, Redstars!
Last year I did my darndest to gather as many possible Redstar aircraft, pi
lots and enthusiasts at Wausau, WI (AUW) Downtown Airport the weekend prior
to OSH for a formation clinic / warm-up for AirVenture. Seven aircraft sho
wed up. We were tutored by 2 major players in the Redstar community. The re
sults were several hours of informative & valuable ground school, some grea
t group flying, new friends, an airport staff that treated us like royalty,
local media coverage and 3 newly-card'ed formation pilots who flew at OSH
in the mass formations. Attendees were enthusiastic & complimentary regardi
ng the mini-Warbird Roundup, so we decided right then and there to make it
an annual thing. So...PLEASE CONSIDER JOINING US THIS YEAR, JULY 21 - 24 fo
r our 2nd swing at a bigger, better event! John "THUD" Casper was the "glue
" for us last year and he has graciously accepted a 2nd opportunity to trad
e his flight helmet for a Packers Cheese Hat and lead us through our paces,
and the awesome airport staff are already busy planning CG-altering meals
and AC-cooled meeting space, and will offer fuel discounts and assist w/ ov
ernight accommodations.
These are the type of confidence / camaraderie-building activities that mak
e what we do so endearing to the dedicated members who love to convert gas
to thunder as we proudly apply horsepower to the Bernoulli Principle! The b
eautiful Wausau Downtown Airport is located on the water, next to a mountai
n - not too hot, not too cold - 1200' elevation w/ 3100' / 5200' asphalt ru
nways, 24 hour fuel and friendly skies far enough WNW of OSH to provide min
imally-congested airspace - yet a mere 30 minutes away when you take off fo
r The Big Show! Numerous impressive vintage aircraft are housed there and i
t is a true-blue, welcoming aviation community and a popular waypoint / sto
p-off for OSH-bound aviators! AND the EAA AirVenture Cup Race culminates th
ere on the 24th - making AUW/ Wausau, WI the place to be for your own EAA "
Christmas Eve!"
