Subject: | Phillips 25W-60 converting to Shell W100Plus |
New CJ owner, looking for knowledgeable advice, this engine has been using the
Phillips 25w-60, which is still being run on today,,, due to not easy access of
this oil, I want to change it over to the Shell W100 Plus which is stock in
my area,, which I can read that many of you are using,,,
My main question is just draining the oil tank, and cooler, and filter, enough
to be emptied out of the old W25-60, then filled with the new shell W100 and run
with it. Or
more I think of it,,,would it be advisable to run it maybe 5 to 10 hrs, and drain
it again to clear up any remainder w25-60,,, any suggestions or better to tell
me what i should do, , would be appreciated, thanks David

I would not worry about a little of the old oil being in the engine. You'll get
rid of most of it with an oil change and normal service replacement.

Richard,
Best to ask, Terry on this site said the same thing, made different oil brand changes
to other aviation engines, Big But' its my first radial, and like any
good student, ask first, thanks for the advice, David

Subject: | Dynamic Balancing in the NW |
There has been a lot of issues with getting dynamic propeller balancing here in
the upper NW area. Since the shop at AWO has closed up, and other local shops
can be weeks out before openings (even if they accepted round engines) - I will
offer my services. I am an A&P/Avionics Engineer for the last 21 years. I
have a Dynavib GX2. I am able to dynamically balance propellers as well as provide
a spectrum analysis of engine/airframe vibrations for both certified as
well as Experimental aircraft. This is very helpful in locating issues when
your prop has been both statically as well as dynamically balanced and you still
are experiencing vibrations. I am based out of AWO but can travel within reason.
If interested please contact me at 480-544-2244. Larry

No need to do any of that. Phillips 25W60 is a mineral oil and is fully
compatible with Aeroshell W100 or W120.

I agree with Walt. Just change out the oil on your next oil change. You
can drain your cooler too, IF you want but you don't need too. I've always
used W100 or W120. Each time I've used 25W60, I get oil leaks. And it
seem to come from every where on the engine. I do not know why.

Thanks for your reassuring message Walt.
I have found that some FBOs don't carry Phillips 25W60 and others don't
carry Aeroshell W100, which can be a pain when travelling around the USA if
one is married to one brand.
I switch and mix as he need arises and haven't seen any bad effects, but
while trying not to do it too often.
Jill has advised previously on the Yak list that prolonged use of Phillips
can cause valve sticking with deposit build up (as I remember her to say)
but that can be countered with the prescribed dosage of CamGuard, while use
Aeroshell doen't seem to result in that "problem"
Jill.
Are you there? Please confirm I'm not misquoting you.
Regards
Royden

The W100 Plus has an additive comparable to the CamGuard.
Its also more protective against corrosion so its the better choice for
engines that dont run very often.
Im using it since many years. Phillips oil is virtually impossible to get
in Europe.
