Rico did a very good job of describing this pain-in-the-rear job.=C2- The
only thing I would add in order to eliminate some of the frustration is to
go ahead and remove the exhaust section.=C2- I personally prefer to do i
t that way versus leaving the exhaust section in place.=C2- Getting every
thing out of the way makes the job easier IMHO.
"The Tool" is an 11 mm T handle wrench about 14-15" long with a 90 degree c
urve on the 11mm box end end.=C2- The 90 degree bend is about a 6" radius
.=C2-=C2- The key is the long, curved 11mm box end which is also turned
90 degrees to the shaft.=C2- In other words, when you hold the T handle
end of the wrench the box 11 mm will fit over the nut. BTW, I believe Terry
Slawinski has the compressor tool in his tool box.=C2- Here's a partial
photo.=C2- http://motorstarna.com/m14p-engines/general-information/65-m14
p-tool-kit.=C2- The tool is #9 in the photo.=C2- Unfortunately though,
=C2- you can't see the 11mm box end.
Everything else Rico described is right on the money.Dennis

Scott,
You don't need to remove any exhaust. But you'll want to remove the compres
sor cooling "horn." You will want to beg, borrow, steal or fabricate the un
ique Russian curved wrench that works miracles in both loosening and tighte
ning the 6 nuts. As Dennis told me the FIRST time I did this, it's a major
pain but with tenacity and patience it is doable. You can eyeball 5 of the
6 nuts. The one at about the 10:00 position is tough. You can glimpse it if
you climb up over the top of the motor. Some go at that one from the port
side, too. But you will have the most success doing this via "Brail." (It c
omes off MUCH easier than it goes on!!) Each nut is held in place with a lo
ck washer as well - and they are tiny and easily lost in the abyss when wor
king in the cramped space. And of course, you'll need to remove the banjo f
itting and associated hardware. Jill has done several compressors for me an
d does very good work. I would assume George would also be a great go-to gu
y here. And it was his son, Cliff who generously loaned me THE TOOL the 1st
time around. Subsequent dealings necessitated cutting off the head of a wr
ench and welding to a semi-flexible, curved shaft. If memory serves, it was
an 11mm. But (happily) it's been a while so it's a little foggy...
Good luck!=C2-

You're more than welcome to be part of this project. I'm an aerobatic pilot

I'm new to the airplane. Are there metric to SAE adapters so that the
engine sensors and instruments can "upgraded" to more modern or US
instruments?
thanks

Rico did a very good job of describing this pain-in-the-rear job. The only
thing I would add in order to eliminate some of the frustration is to go

way makes the job easier IMHO.
"The Tool" is an 11 mm T handle wrench about 14-15" long with a 90 degree
curve on the 11mm box end end. The 90 degree bend is about a 6" radius. The
key is the long, curved 11mm box end which is also turned 90 degrees to the
shaft. In other words, when you hold the T handle end of the wrench the box
11 mm will fit over the nut. BTW, I believe Terry Slawinski has the
compressor tool in his tool box. Here's a partial photo.

. The tool is #9 in the photo. Unfortunately though, you can't see the 11mm
box end.
Everything else Rico described is right on the money. Dennis

Scott,
You don't need to remove any exhaust. But you'll want to remove the
compressor cooling "horn." You will want to beg, borrow, steal or fabricate
the unique Russian curved wrench that works miracles in both loosening and
tightening the 6 nuts. As Dennis told me the FIRST time I did this, it's a
major pain but with tenacity and patience it is doable. You can eyeball 5
of the 6 nuts. The one at about the 10:00 position is tough. You can
glimpse it if you climb up over the top of the motor. Some go at that one
from the port side, too. But you will have the most success doing this via
"Brail." (It comes off MUCH easier than it goes on!!) Each nut is held in
place with a lock washer as well - and they are tiny and easily lost in the
abyss when working in the cramped space. And of course, you'll need to
remove the banjo fitting and associated hardware. Jill has done several
compressors for me and does very good work. I would assume George would
also be a great go-to guy here. And it was his son, Cliff who generously
loaned me THE TOOL the 1st time around. Subsequent dealings necessitated
cutting off the head of a wrench and welding to a semi-flexible, curved
shaft. If memory serves, it was an 11mm. But (happily) it's been a while so
it's a little foggy...
Good luck!

I am going to have to send my air compressor in for rebuild. Any hints for
extracting the unit from the M-14P maze? Looks like the right side exhaust
will have to be removed and the top nuts look especially fun! Any special
tools or techniques that could be helpful would be appreciated. Also my
Balkan radio doesn't work after a period of inactivity. Where to start
investigating?

Hello Serge;
If I'm not lucky on finding someone who's willing to give me a ride in a
18T
in the East Coast; I'll travel to Prienai, Lithuania to the Termikas Compan
y & try to arrange my training there. I know that Vytas Maciulis the owner,
w
ill help me with that issue, as he's selling me the aircraft.
You're more than welcome to be part of this project. I'm an aerobatic
pilot,
but also need an aircraft that can carry my family out of the Fly In, so I
b
elieve that the 18T is right for me.
=46rom now on; I'll copy you in all my communications with everyone
involved
..
Thank you & best regards.

One thing to consider about "re-building" the compressor. One shop recently charged
my TW's previous owner $1700 to rebuild his AK-50. I was able to buy a brand
new AK-50P12 (uprated versioin) for $1000 shipped from Bulgaria.
