Tossed it into some solvent and swished it around, blew it dry. Poured the solvent through a paper towel filter to look for contaminants. Nice and clean, no metal but there in the middle was a round rubber disc about 3 mm (1/8 in) thick slightly smaller in diameter than the end of the filter screen. It has a 3 mm slot in it off center. Where the hell does it go and what orientation? The M-14 manual shows a gasket in the sump parts blow - up diagram but it looks like an O-ring not a disc. Cleaned the screen multiple times but never seen this before (that I can remember). Anyone with a better memory than me? The slot fits over the tab before attaching the chip light wire terminal. It is intended to prevent an inadvertent contact to ground which would energize the light. You do not have a problem. It goes on the outside of the chip detector. Install it before you bolt up the wire connection.
