Phil, the rheostat controls the light in the compass that is mounted on the deck.
 The light indicates when the generator is not charging such as at low rpm
or if you have a generator fail.

This was my brothers. He was a nav on C-130's. I think the helmet is an extra large
and the mask is a long. Last inspection in 2013. Comes with helmet bag. The
helmet is in pretty good condition. There is a boom mic but for mil use only
and has a lip light attached. There is also the hardware for NVG's. 

$750.00 for both or $550.00 for just the helmet. Shipping is included.
