Good morning all- I've noticed the forward, 3-way fitting common to my CJ6's fuel header tank (the Chinese call it "consumption tank") has a slow weep. Nothing ground the airplane for, but since I'm in town with extra time I'd like to address it sooner than later. Has anyone removed & reinstalled this fitting before? My thought is to clean everything, and wet-install the fitting with a fuel resistant sealant. All else in this tank and entire fuel system are tight & working well. Before I start, does anyone have success stories to share, pitfalls to be aware of? Much appreciated all- Justin N280NC, Seattle

Walt, I guess there are many different variants to electrical fuel pump installations. Mine is reasonably simple. But let's look at a standard CJ's fuel system. During normal operation (no wobble pump), 100% of the fuel from the tanks feed through this check valve on its way to the engine driven pump. I know of many people who have had incidents of center tank (hopper) check valves sticking, I have been one. So it is entirely possible that the same type of flapper check valve located in the floor can cause issues. In my case, the hinge pin was slightly bent, allowing the flapper to move side to side in such a way that it makes contact with the hinge pivot points. When I removed this valve, and after I cleaned it, I was able to get it to stick closed and stick open just by shaking it. So it stands to reason that is the engine receives 100% of its fuel thru this check valve and this check valve fails closed, no fuel will reach the engine. Now the reason it worked while on my electric fuel pump is because my pump sucks fuel aft of this valve and dumps it forward of the valve, thereby bypassing the check valve. The reason I couldn't get more than 50% power while on the elect pump was because this valve was closed. The pump which supplies 5psi at 35 gal/hr still needs the original normal -8 (equivalent) fuel line to supply volume while the elect pump supplies volume and pressure. Once corrected, a flow test was performed, with engine off and electric fuel pump on, to provide 35 gal/hr. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=467543#467543

A bit of caution might be due here as what you may be seeing is fuel leaking from a portion of the header tank which has corroded through due to sediment building up on the inside over the years. We have seen many which when poked or prodded with a screw driver the "weeping" area quickly turned into a river. Good Morning, Redstars! This is major advance notice, but just like last year, my band SONIC CIRCUS (find us on FB!) will be playing in the infamous SOS Bros beer tent on Tue sday, July 25th, 9 - 1. Last year, we had Lee Haven and Dan Booker represen ting the Redstar contingency - and while they danced very well together ('T hought doing the "mambo" to Van Halen was...um...boldly innovative!) it wou ld be nice to see more of you there this year! But on a brighter note, Cind y Haven was there, too! :-D Also, would love to once again try to assemble a Pre-OSH gathering in Wausa u, WI (AUW) if you're headed to EAA early. The airport treats us well and i t's fun for the locals to witness what they must think is a remake of RED D AWN in their normally-friendly & sedate skies! The management grills us a m eal or 2, plenty of free tie-down room, nice hotels in close proximity and plenty to see / do on your down time. (BARS!) There's also a $100 Hamburger Fly In every week night in WI! Even if you can't stay, set down for one la st fuel-up and a cold soda 35 minutes from OSH and say "HI!" If there's any interest, please let me know and I'll start gathering a list of attendees and initiate a separate email group. I also plan on promoting this caper wh en we get a bit closer to GO TIME. Thanks for the consideration, and always PROUD to be affiliated with you al l! Justin; There is an interesting conundrum regarding the fuel outlet fitting in the header tank that may be the cause of your leak. It attaches to the header tank with a 3/8=9D NPT thread. We all kno w that pipe thread is universal and is used with metric, SAE, AN, etc. fitt ings worldwide. Well; sort of! Pipe thread originated in Britain during the days of steam and became the w orld standard. The thread pitch varied with fitting dia. With the 3/8 =9D size the British standard was 19 TPI. At some point in history the US decided to reduce the reduce the number of different pitches in use and the 3/8=9D was changed to 18 TPI. In early production of the CJ the Chinese used the original British standar d but later the US. In replacing a header tank some years ago I found the original fitting woul d not fit properly in the new tank. Finally measured the pitch and the fou nd the discrepancy. Mystified, since all the info I had specified 18, I t ook the 19 TPI fitting to a machinist friend who immediately said =9C that=99s British=9D. In a few minutes he recut it to 18. Problem solved. The difference is small and could have been forced in to place but taper pi pe thread should enter the first few threads easily by hand. I strictly av oid the use of any commercial thread sealers in aircraft pipe fittings and use only Parker Threadlube or Seallube. In 60+ years have never had a prob lem.
