Subject: | Re: Alternator Mod CJ-6A |
Mark hit on a list of things on why to change over to an alternator. All
are very valid. To me weight almost alone, is the most significant. It
requires two arms to carry that generator. Not so the alternator. In these
airplanes pounds count. When I got my CJ, it was right out of the box from
China. I removed over 186 POUNDS of radios and their needed wiring.
After adjusting the CG with ballast, I was able to realized 133 POUNDS of
payload increase. After installing the M14p, which heavier than the HS6, I
found that changing over the alternator, I would NOT have to add as much
ballast to compensate if I kept the generator. In aircraft of this size -
every pound counts.
BTW anyone need a nice room at OSH?

It depends on your particular system. I have not worked on CJ-6's, but
with the Russian designs you are dealing with a list of parts that can
sometimes be difficult to troubleshoot.
Generator
Voltage Regulator
Over-Voltage control
DMR-200 device, which consists of a reverse current relay, main contactor
relay, etc.
Bucking transformer
These devices are actually reminiscent of any of the older generator
designs found in airplanes and cars. Remember that several decades ago, all
automobiles and airplanes ran generators and not alternators. Electrical
design advancements let to the alternator as a more efficient, lighter weight,
and easier to troubleshoot device. The reasons for switching an airplane
from a generator design to one that uses an alternator are just as valid
today as they were years ago. More than anything else, they are cheaper (at
least from an initial design perspective).
That said, there is nothing wrong with using a generator, and there is
also the saying: "If it works, don't fix it", but many aircraft owners with
generator systems decide to go with an alternator design, especially when
they start having problems, and often-times to save weight and improve
reliability.

I've had my CJ for three years now. Never had an electrical issue. Why
would I want to switch to an alternator? There must be some good reasons.

Please could someone confirm EXACTLY the parts I need for the B&C
alternator conversion.
So far, BC412 35amp alternator, LS-1A voltage regulator and an M14P
generator mounting plate (?).
It will be done by my maintenance organisation, not me. That said, any top
tips gratefully received. Thanks.

Start: Good on 3+ air
Air: 3 on take-off
Gear, would not retract.
Recovered on EMG air.
Refilled system to 5+
Start, taxi, TO, 3+ on air, still no gear retraction.
Cleaned and serviced the banjo fitting, soaked check valve in gas overnight.
System holds air.
Questions:
How long does it take to increase system air pressure during a ground run?
What else could be the problem?

Subject: | Re: Another Air Problem |
If you recently did a gear retraction test, did you bleed off the air by
squeezing off the brakes until the "fart valve" wentoff? What's
happening is the shuttle valveballs are either pushed over blocking the
main air side (that's why the gear won't retract) or a check valve under
the floor in the rear cockpit is leaking, allowing air pressure when you
turn on the main air valveto fill the emergency side, thus pushing the
shuttle valve ballsagain blocking the main side of the shuttle valve.
Until you find and fix the leak in the main system, you may not be able
to build pressure above what you're already seeing.
I have only seen the following once in 18 years. There are two check
valve located at the entry to brake reducing valve under the floor in
the rear cockpit. One isolates the main side and the other isolates the
emergency side. If the check valve that isolates the emergency side
leaks, it will allow the airflowing through the main side check valve to
pass over to the emergency side, thus pushing the shuttle valve balls
over where they block the main air side of the shuttle valve. As long as
there is pressure on the emergency side of the shuttle valve, you will
not be able to retract the gear until you eliminate the pressure on the
emergency side when the main air is turned on.
The only time there should be air pressure on the emergency side is when
you open the emergency air valveto extend the gear. Then after you
extend the gear with the emergency side, you must bleed off the air in
the system before you reopen the main air valve. When you've bled off
the air from the emergency extension, then open the main air valve, the
main air pressure will move the shuttle valve balls back against the
emergency side of the shuttle valve, thus allowing thegear to be
retracted normally.

After you reset the toggle valves on each gear (as several others have mentioned),
put the aircraft on jacks and test it there. You will hear any leaks, and
be able to carefully observe proper operation. If you are having problems with
the landing gear, the place to check the problem is not in flight.
