    From: "JL2A" <info@flyingwarbirds.com.au>
thanks all. I'm not convinced it is simply restrictors - but happy to go with the simplest answer! My doubts come from: A) Did not see any. The entire MLG air lines from rear cockpit outwards was replaced. Many small items were dropped (those tiny CJ spring washers!) but all found. Eventually. No restrictors though. The one restrictor found on this aircraft is in flap system. I will double check if they've been left pressed-on to the old air lines though. B) It is not immediately clear to me why it swings its legs out of bed in strange sequence when flown with gear handle in up, compared to perfect extension when using the (non-normal) NEUTRAL - UP 2 3 4 - DOWN method. It seems like it is more related to how LONG the pressure resides in the UP system. Testing reveals that if you try NEUTRAL - UP 2 3 4 5 6 ... 10 - DOWN it starts to go out of sequence ('sequence' meaning all three red lights going out together and red lights coming on together). One can hear it only takes a few seconds to fully pressurise the UP side - so could there be a leak somewhere? The longer the handle is left in UP, the more reluctant the MLGs are to come down at same time as NLG. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=472769#472769

Hi, Interesting subject as on my last display with my Yak 50 had the same experience. Was to fly a Display to celebrate opening of a new Museum at an old abandoned WW II German Airstrip here in Norway. After take-off from my base its only 10 minutes flight time to where the display took place. After take-off I kept Aerobatic power setting and all the way. Display started and lasted 10-12 min. On the last "low-pass" 400+ km/t and 200 feet the engine made a, in my opinion Misfire. I pulled up and gained 1500 feet to sort the shit out. As I like to see out the cockpit on low passes I did,t see on the fuel pressure gauges when the "misfired" happened. Did that on the climb out and all gauges where Normal. Can't remember my Cylinder temp, but I am sure it was in the green arc, the Gills was fully open and around 10c' outside temp. I circled overhead the old German Airstrip and prepared an emergency landing if the engine went quiet. It did run stable, but a little rough so I sat course back home and landed safely. Back at base I did a leak check on all cylinders, checked for leaks on fuel system, checked all filters, Have not checked fuel vent yet(shall do that) Since the ignition system is original I have decide to replace with Auto Ignition Kit, and new magnetos. For the moment I suspect the ignition to be my source of wake up during the low-pass:-) Kind Regards Havard Norway 2017-09-09 0:38 GMT+02:00 Adrian Hale <coolade2@gmail.com>: > > My Yaks never did this but my good friend had the exact problem you > describe we were told that 25w60 would cause it-- made no sense to me as an > engineer but we went back to shell 120 and the problem went away. > > Sent from my iPad > > > On Sep 8, 2017, at 12:32 PM, Bitterlich, Mark G CIV NAVAIR, WD < > mark.bitterlich@navy.mil> wrote: > > > mark.bitterlich@navy.mil> > > > > Oh darn. Update: Flew several hours this weekend, no low approaches, and she ran like a top. After doing a good bit of pattern work to make certain things were stable, I took her up and put her through the paces - she was very happy about it and purred along like she should. Thanks to all that offered suggestions, I'm looking into all of them: 1. Possible icing 2. Oil 3. Sticking valve (add Mystery Oil) I'll post updates as I have them, but with this hurricane coming in I'm afraid it may be a bit! Luckily my airport loves airplanes and pilots, and we get a lot of transient warbirds or airshow birds in and out, as well as a good many radial bipes, etc., and everyone loves to see them, not bitch at them. I can say one positive thing these threads have done is change the way I'll make radio calls in case I have to go around in the future. Subject: Need Emergency Air Bottle
Greetings! I've been living with a leaking emergency air system for a while on my -52. It used to slowly bleed-off over days, but now it flat-lines within severa l hours. I've gone through check valves, external fill and emergency air va lve in rear cockpit - all to no avail. I think the next best guess is a lea ky bottle. Therefore...does anyone have a spare (new or used) emergency sph ere for sale? (Ideally that I could "try" first to see if it solves the pro blem) OR...if you have a different theory, I'm all ears! Primary system retains full air indefinitely. 2nd big question: Is this an air bottle catastrophic failure waiting to hap pen if I continue to fill to capacity prior to flight? On a side note...thoughts and prayers to those of you enduring "The Year Of The Hurricanes." Thank you all! Yak and CJ are not the same. I stock the new stainless steel Yak 52 main and emergency bottles. They are inspection free because they are stainless steel. They are heavier because they have a thicker side wall. Also stock them for the CJ6 Best, Doug On Mon, Sep 11, 2017 at 7:26 AM, Marcus Bates <marcusbates@att.net> wrote: > Have one for CJ. Even if it only the small emergency bottle, I would be very cautious about continue to fill it if there is a suspicion of a leak until you know whether it is the bottle or one of the air-lines! We had a Yak 50 in the UK whose air bottle blew up, very fortunately while on the ground, but had it happened in the air, it would have certainly brought the aeroplane down! Rico- suggest u pull the bottle and inspect; rusty water can sit on the bottom of t hose things over time and eventually corrode a pinhole in it. Won't be anything "catastrophic" other than almost instant loss of emerg air . Had to replace mine for that reason. Easy to pull out; remove baggage fl oor (if you have one) and gain access through rear cockpit "doors"; has a me tal strap system that holds it in the bracket and a turnbuckle-like bolt ide ntical (small 7 mm box wrench) to your wing attach cover strap that wraps ar ound the wing attach access. One 17mm b nut and out she comes. Have to man euver it around elevator and rudder cables. Good idea to pull, clean and tr eat inside with anti-corrosive (ACF-50/Corrosion X) on a regular basis as bo ttle just sits there with static pressure not moving for very long periods o f time. Consult true experts on the list for their advice is also my advice ...ha, ha! Good luck!! Hello Kevin, Good to hear from you and hope all is well in your life. We are now quite close to selling our hotel in Sri Lanka =93 the decision of my wife and not me! =93 which will be sad, but will free up a lot of time. I am sorry, but you're wrong to say "nothing catastrophic". Of course, failure could well be a pin hole, or it can be a catastrophic explosion =93 remember you are dealing with around 750 psi. I feel strongly that every aircraft air bottle should be tested to at least 1.5 times normal operating pressure every three years as a maximum interval. I have seen them fail under test, but of course this is relatively mild since they are filled with water and then sitting inside a water tank. But out in the open, the results can be dramatic. I emphasise that I have no commercial interest in these bottles, only that of safety =93 but I know that Doug has new stainless steel bottles to sell. Won't be anything "catastrophic" other than almost instant loss of emerg air. Had to replace mine for that reason. Easy to pull out; remove baggage floor (if you have one) and gain access through rear cockpit "doors"; has a metal strap system that holds it in the bracket and a turnbuckle-like bolt identical (small 7 mm box wrench) to your wing attach cover strap that wraps around the wing attach access. One 17mm b nut and out she comes. Have to maneuver it around elevator and rudder cables. Good idea to pull, clean and treat inside with anti-corrosive (ACF-50/Corrosion X) on a regular basis as bottle just sits there with static pressure not moving for very long periods of time. Consult true experts on the list for their advice is also my advice...ha, ha! Good luck!! The results when an air bottle blows up! Not pretty, and potentially disastrous. Check the emergency air valves in both cockpits.=C2- You can remove the o utput fitting on the valve and spray with soapy water to determine if it is leaking past the valve.Dennis From: Rico Jaeger <rocknpilot@hotmail.com> To: "yak-list@matronics.com" <yak-list@matronics.com> Sent: Monday, September 11, 2017 10:13 AM Subject: Yak-List: Need Emergency Air Bottle <!--#yiv4185270996 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;}-->Greetings!
