Subject: | Baklan won't transmit |
Hi Yakkers,
I have the original baklan radio in my Yak 18T - series II. I can hear other aircraft,
the intercom works fine but when I try and transmit via the PTT switch
no one can hear me. It drops a carrier wave but there is no audible transmission
coming through. It is the same on both sides. Has anyone had a similar fault?
Thanks in advance.

I had this exact same thing happen a year ago. The FBO / other aircraft sai
d they could detect the carrier wave but no audio. Upon inspection, one of
the wires had let go on my helmet / headset jacks. 2 minutes of soldering l
ater...VOILA!
It may be worth a look...
GOOD LUCK!

It's a good thought Rico, but if you read his posting carefully, you'll notice
he said his Intercom was working perfectly. If the ICS is working with good
microphone audio, it is not the headset or the plugs, sockets, etc. I've held
off commenting on his predicament because troubleshooting it is not that easy
unless you have some sort of equipment. That said, I'll give it a shot.
First, be darn sure it has good carrier output ... it would be nice to connect
a watt-meter to it and actually check power output.
The easiest next step is to borrow a radio from another owner (YAK-52's use the
same radio) plug it in and see if it fixes the problem. The issue is if that
is not possible. There are many ways to figure out if microphone audio is
getting to the radio itself. These run the gamut from Oscilloscopes, to low level
audio meters, etc. Obviously the goal here is to verify that mike audio
is getting to the radio itself properly. That is the logic tree split ... wiring/parts
going to the radio, or the radio itself. The problem deals with how
much training you have had, and your ability to use the tools.
With that in mind, if you can't get your hands on a borrowed radio R/T itself,
take a look at the link below. This telephone troubleshooting tool includes
an inductive pickup probe with speaker. There are different brand names for this
tool, and last time I checked even Lowe's had them available.
https://www.amazon.com/Extech-40180-Generator-Amplifier-Circuit/dp/B00023RVNO
And much much cheaper on EBay:
https://www.ebay.com/p/Progressive-Tempo-200EP-Inductive-Amplifier-77hp-Probe-Kit/1107588415
This tool allows you to just stick the probe near the wire itself. You can stick
it into the back shell of a cannon plug where the pins go (carefully) and listen
to actual audio that is being carried through the wire. Yes, it gets much
louder if you actually touch the metal of the pin itself, but just getting
close to it will work. The other half of this device is a tone GENERATOR.
It puts audio INTO a wire so that you can then check it with the Inductive Pickup
Probe!
Besides checking for mike audio, this tool set has many other very powerful uses.
If you put a tone into a wire that is in a bundle, you can pull the wires
apart further down in the airplane and FIND that exact wire, without cutting
and dicing. This was exactly the intent of the design, and although it was meant
for telephone cable pairs, it works on ANY wire for ANY purpose and will
accomplish the goal here with very little training.

Great point, Mark. Well, that's what you get when a music teacher ventures

I did mine just as a matter of course. I maintain a 5 year inspection. I found
that my emergency tank was severely pitted and test house would not test it.
This was a time bomb waiting to happen. I replaced my emergency bottle and
main checked good. Always a good check to be done, but many ignore. :?
