Also in the original manual it recommends, after cylinder priming, to wait for
the fuel to vapourise for 1-2 minutes in summer & 4-5 in winter before starting
from cold.
This pause makes it much more likely to fire up first time, as engines run on vapour
not liquid, and the supercharger priming point is a long way from the cylinder
heads.
Hence why pulling through per prime also helps as it provides a fresh impeller
surface area to vapourise fuel from.
Don't forget to prime the system side again just before start, to purge any bubbles
in the fuel system, as pressure carbs are akin to single point fuel injection
systems in being intolerant of even momentary fuel pressure drops.
IMHO this is the most common cause of failed starts and the cheapest to fix :-)

Good call Blitz.
A drop in Emerg. press. would suggest internal leakage in the charge syste

On the CJ, rebuild or replace the check valve on the right side of
firewall.

Thanks Walter and Gary that's the way I read it also. I was hoping some of the
people that are using different weight would come up with something.

The aircraft having the issue is a YAK-52. Do they have the same check

The Yak 52 uses a different check valve than the CJ6.
We recently developed a conversion to allow the CJ6 check valve to be used
on the 52. The CJ6 check valves are lower cost and are very easy to
maintain, Roger Kemp converted his 52 to CJ6 check valves recently.

Icould be wrong, but I believe Doc Kemp converted 2 of the 5 Yak 52
check valves over to CJ check valves. Those two were on the firewall on
each side of the pressure relief valve. The other 3 are:
-2 under thefloor in the rear cockpit and connectto the input side of
the Yak 52 brake reducing valve; one side for the emergency system and
one for the main system. (real pain in the rear to get to. So unlikely
they will be changed unless a problem existed.)
-1 at the input of the external air fill port which allows airflow to
the emergency air tank from the external air fill port.

YAK 52. The issue he's having is that he's depleting air from the emergency system
when actuating the landing gear with the emergency air system CLOSED and
normal pressures on main system.

Is this a totally stock Yak 52 or has there been any modifications to
the pneumatic system?
Did the problem just occur or did it happen after doing a gear
retraction/extension test including extending the gear with the
emergency system?
If the air is depletingon both main and emergency sidesusing the gear,
what happens to both side when you move the flaps up and down several times?
What happens if you squeeze the brakes several times until you can
physically see the main air side going down?

Dennis,
My records show that he purchased 6 check valves, rather he installed them
all I do not know. I do recall that he called back needing a 90 degree
fitting for one location.

Doug,
I know the Yak 50 uses the same Chinese check valvestoo. The 90 deg
fittingis used by bothcheck valves on either side of the pop off valve
on the firewall of the Yak 52.

Hmmm;
If this were a CJ the (presumably) offending check valve is the one that
allows the EM tank to be charged in the SYSTEM CLOSED position as it must
be. Normally
this is done in conjunction with charging the main air tank with that system
OPEN but can also be done independent of the main tank with the main system
closed.
I take advantage of that feature to maintain a mostly N2 charge in the EM
tank.
BUT this is a not a CJ and I have no knowledge of the Yak 52. Have heard
that the EM tank is charged separately from the main. If so, is there an
on-board charging circuit built into the aircraft that you hook up to? Or
do you remove the tank?
If an on-board circuit then chances are you have the same (though Russian
style) check valve - non return as the CJ somewhere in the system.

YAK 52. The issue he's having is that he's depleting air from the emergency
system when actuating the landing gear with the emergency air system CLOSED
and normal pressures on main system.

Essentially Walt, there is a Y fitting on the external air fill port.
One side, with a check valve, fills the emergency tank and the other leg
of the Y fills the main tank. Once the emergency tank is filled from the
external air fill port, it's filled. The only way it can go down is to
open one of the two emergency air valves or there is a leak. There
simply is no common connection between the main and emergency systems
without one of the two emergency air valve being open.
If anyone is thinking that it could be one of the instruments leaking
between the two sides, it's impossible because behind the common
faceplate of the instrument are two separate instrument housings with no
connection between the two.
The emergency air system on the 52 is completely isolated from the main
air system. That'sthe reason I asked the questions that I did earlier.
Once I get the answers to the questions, I'll try diagnosing the problem
further. Hopefully I'll be able to help.

Have you tried getting parts from companies which offer metal machining services, like this one (http://www.powerjackmotion.com/product-category/metal-maching-service/) for example? The said company has lift systems as one of their specialties, but most of these are for automation or motion control; however, they also offer metal machining services which, I think, you can leverage to get a jack made for you according to your desired measurement.

Yes --- "or if there is a leak". That check valve is a potential leak
source.
Whether it is the culprit in this case I certainly don't know but it seems
to fit the description and should be checked out.

I stopped at the Firewall conversion. Works fine. My leak was on the system s
ide at the firewall. I plan to change the FCP shut off valves out as soon as
I have time.
Had a family medical issue that grounded me for the summer. System has sat f
or approx. 3 months. The system had lost 1 ATM over 3 months as of last Sund
ay.
