Subject: | CJ stock ignition wires |
Good morning
Would someone be so kind as to supply me with the size and spec of the stock OEM
HT ignition wires for the housai?
I am going to replace all my leads with new and will make them up in situ.
Not looking to go automotive plugs and thick dia wires tie wrapped to intake tubes
at this time
Thanks

Harv,
FYI - the automotive conversion kit is designed so you can either
tie-wrap the wires OR you can reuse the stand-off clamps that are used
with the original ignition harness. The instructions with the kit gives
you the option to install it either way.

Having 1600 hours in the CJ and Yak 52 and about half that with original
wires/plugs vs. Dennis' wires/plugs (on 2 different engines) I can tell
you Dennis' wire conversion is FAR SUPERIOR to stock. The first time I
did the conversion I waiting until the wires broke down and I had
ignition problems, the second time I just purchased them on the engine.
No one that I'm aware of has ever complained about doing the conversion
after flying with it.
Up to you....

Thanks
I have nothing against the automotive conversion I just thought the large dia 8mm
leads wont pull through the stock harness ring on the back of the engine?
As I have low time stock plugs and lots of new parts in the caps at the plug ends
I wanted to stick with those parts for now.

You are correct. They will not pull thru the original ring. (18-5mm wires vs..
18-8mm wires) The ring is removed during the installation of the automotive conversation
kit.
If you have not pulled replacement 5 mm wires thru the original ring, you will
need a lot patience. When first installed, the ring and wire assemblies are assembled
"on the bench" then installed on the engine. That's why the ring splits
at the top-center. The original 5mm wires are loosely laced together and then
passed thru the ring halves.

Update on the notso snotty snot valve. We removed it yesterday and it
was completely obstructed with coagulated snot/debris. 30 minutes of
flushing with avgas still had it letting small and large chunks go. We
switched to hot tap water with Dawn dishwashing detergent and that
seemed to let bigger chunks go faster. We vibrated it with the rough
spot on a bench grinder as is sped up and slowed down, beat on it with
the plastic handle of a screwdriver and blew it out after every
flush/cleaning attempt. It took two hours and probably 40 cleaning
cycles before it looked like we were getting to the end of the junk.
The final flushes with avgas dumped into a coffee filter looked pretty
good. It now works properly. If we'd had an ultrasonic cleaner it
probably would have been the best method to get it all soaked/vibrated
loose.
The rebuilt compressor works fine. The rubber tip on the piston in the
pop off valve was bad and limiting the pressure build up.

Rebuilt compressor may very well be the problem. Over the years I've
seen several so-called "rebuilt" compressors fail in more ways than one.

Regarding the corroded snot bottle "innards"; recommend replacing both firew
all and belly with a modern SS swagelok ball valve. Won't ever rust so two l
ess future headaches. Awesome mod!! I have learned the hard way that with o
ur pneumatic systems any chance to change to stainless steel components/spri
ngs, along with regular preventative maintenance WILL make for a healthier s
ystem. My 2 cents.

Ultrasonic cleaning is really the only way to go for this kind of
long-term congealed stuff. This is particularly true of oil coolers
=93 we have many customers complaining of hot oil, and the simple
problem is that they are using 30 year old oil coolers which people have
said that they have "cleaned", simply by flushing them with fuel and
other solvents. The problem is that they have hardened oil insulating
the cooler, and the only way to get rid of this is with ultrasonic
cleaning.

Dennis,
Not my YAK, just throwing in a hand to get it up and running.
Bill's in Korea (South) torturing 777 pilots for Boeing. I intend to
flush mine now this winter, even though it "blows" lots of snot. Any
reduced capacity from built up crud likely decreases its efficiency in
separating the water. I think I'll try the ultrasonic cleaning method
as well since I likely won't be in a hurry to get it back up and
running. Lots of time to spare when my hangar has deep snow drifts in
front of it......

Many people completely ignore flushing the snot bottle every couple of
years and the result is exactly what you've experienced Mark. Glad you
got it fixed.

Mark,
Excellent! Ihope everyone who reads about cleaning the snot bottle
takes it to heart. BTW, the only "drift" I have outside my hangar in
the winter is the shadow from my hangar because it faces due north. :-)

I have found that putting Drano in the bottle and soaking it. Maybe several times
also Eats the rust and crud. Gary. CJ. N22YK

obstructed with coagulated snot/debris. 30 minutes of flushing with
avgas still had it letting small and large chunks go. We switched to hot tap water
with Dawn dishwashing detergent and that seemed to let bigger chunks go faster.
We vibrated it with the rough spot on a bench grinder as is sped up and
slowed down, beat on it with the plastic handle of a screwdriver and blew it
out after every flush/cleaning attempt. It took two hours and probably 40 cleaning
cycles before it looked like we were getting to the end of the junk. The
final flushes with avgas dumped into a coffee filter looked pretty good. It
now works properly. If we'd had an ultrasonic cleaner it probably would have
been the best method to get it all soaked/vibrated loose.
