Maybe the mags are not working and it is just the shower of sparks that is firing. Be sure the magneto wiring is correct. george -----Original Message----- From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Flibob Sent: Saturday, June 2, 2018 5:12 PM Subject: Yak-List: Re: Chinese rebuild engine Still working on this engine. Starts but won't run unless 1. Throttle is pumped constantly or 2 wobble is pumped or 3 primer is pumped. Any of which will keep engine running at 1500 +_. I have taken the carberater and fuel pump off running engine with no effect. Also cleaned points in both mags. Any ideas? Sam and I had bought two new engines from Aerostar at the very same time. I had mine in my CJ before Sam and was running well. Sam installed his engine and sometime later on a run-up, his engine quit. He could get the engine started but not keep running as your's seem to be doing. Back at the hangar, he found a screw missing on top of the carburetor. This was the only screw NOT safetied on the carb right out of the factory. It was a port used to drain the preserving oil out of the carb after storage. His screw had come out and fallen away. He quickly called me and I found that my screw was VERY loose and about to fall out. He saved me from an engine failure in the not too distant future. Now I can't remember if the HS6 carbs are exactly the same as the M-14s, but give that a quick check. Jim "Pappy" Goolsby -----Original Message----- From: George S. Most likely independent and first attempt at recovering by someone in a hurry. There are a number of excellent recovering system out there that are easier to apply than the original cotton process. It does not take much effort to really do a nice job IF one is not in a hurry. Properly recovered controls add a market value to the airplane as well as some aerodynamic property. The newer covering systems last a hell of a lot longer than cotton any day. As for the trim 1/16th does not sound "bad" to me, after all, she's a 52, not an Extra 300XL. ;-) Jim "Pappy" Goolsby -----Original Message----- From: Rico Jaeger Sent: Fri, Jun 1, 2018 3:37 pm Subject: Yak-List: Yak Control Surface Curiosity TGIF! My Yak is just coming out of annual and, as usual - my A&P asked questions I had no answer for. He noticed my ailerons appear to be covered in cotton (?) and a very poor job, at that. One has reinforcement tape on it while the other has none. The finish is more of an abrasive, cardboard quality than smooth-as-glass. Elevators and rudder appear to be more conventional covering processes. They are glossy and smooth, but are poorly done w/ bunched-up seams and wavy lines, etc. We were wondering if this is "status quo?" Were the surfaces done at several factories and then met on the assembly line? Or are these examples of poor, independent workmanship? N21YK is a '92. One other thing: how tight should the trim tab be? Is any play in the linkage normal / acceptable? (...as in 1/16") Just wondering... Thanks! I am finishing up my 50=99s control surfa ces using the book as a guide and using Stits poly fiber. I had cotton also. Was a wonder the surfaces did not flutter like hell with the gobs of cotton I pull out of the controls. The excess was not trimmed. It was wadded up in side the controls.
