I agree with Mark. But if you have a diaphragm/membrane failure, then after
the engine has been shut down, leave the fuel on and the throttle slightly
open, and you will almost certainly get fuel dripping down through the
carburettor. If none comes out, then I would suspect a coil failure.
I would also make the point that, very specifically, these diaphragms (and
there are two in each carburettor) should be replaced at a maximum of every
six years.

May I ask why you think you need a carb diaphragm ?? The reason I ask is
simply because when one of them tears, or fails, it does not fix itself and
then you fly home.
If all of a sudden you start running very rich , etc., etc., yes. Or if the
engine stops running... as in it totally stops running .... yes, probably.
But if it stops in flight for a few moments and then starts running again...
or something like that, it could be electrical as in mag coils. That can
often be very difficult to define.
You probably know all this already, so ... sorry.

They are definitely NOT interchangeable. Tried it many, many years ago when
I was trying to adapt the manual mixture control from the Huosai carburetor
to the M14 carburetor.

Not sure if it works for all symptoms described, but fuel odor in cockpit could
be leaking primer due to loose knurled nut on primer plunger or worn/cut plunger
o-ring under knurled nut...also causing lean issues. Have you seen, smelled
any fuel from top of plunger during priming?
Bonus is fixes dont come much cheaper or easier.

I tried the Lightspeeds, Zulu 3 , and then the Bose A 20s.
If I turn on the ANR is too loud and noisy, I can barely hear anything above the
noise, only way to be able to hear is with ANR turned off.
Anyone else experienced this?

The ANR feature of the Bose A20 works as well, or even better than the custom molded
military earpieces I used to use with a standard ANR system. The Bose A20
installed into the Lift AV-1 KOR helmet is an amazing combination. Have only
heard praise from Bose A20 users who fly the CJ and/or the Yak.

I use the A20s in my CJ. Never had a problem hearing, but they go through batteries

Myself, I use Clarity Alofts. Been using them for 10 years. They are not
noise cancelling but weigh 2 oz, foam ear buds that conform to your ear
canals and don't need batteries. I put them on and put my helmet over them
as the frame assembly fits behind your neck. Check them out if your going
to Sun n fun or Oshkosh. They may even have a 30 day try for free but not
sure. My wife loves her. Doesn't mess up her hair and no head clamp pain.

I am not a CJ expert ... in fact far from it .... but the smell of fuel smell in
the cockpit, along with your other problems makes me less focused on a mag coil
problem, which I was actually thinking about, (your read my mind Richard)
and it still could be. But to have the engine totally quit for more than a second
or two makes me consider fuel. But I would not be thinking carb diaphragms
right off the git-go, instead I would be considering fuel vents. Before ripping
the carb apart, I would take a very hard look , including some testing,
of the fuel vent system, which again.... I know nothing about on a CJ.
Just guessing.

Hi Mark,
Our thoughts are as follows. I was aerobatting and came off a loop to a strong
smell of fuel in the cockpit. There were no engine issues at this stage. It cleared
so I thought I'd carry on. The same occurred again and the engine missed
but recovered so I took the hint and went home. I pulled the power back to 68/2000
and it missed twice more on the way home so I left the levers alone as it
kept recovering. I recovered to the airfield from a forced landing pattern and
the engine quit during the roll out as the airflow was seemingly driving the
prop during the descent, so I effectively deadsticked it in. It glides much
better than a -52!! Our thought is that it rich-cut as I pulled the throttle back
for the descent.
I've had a mag failure in a Yak-52 in the past which gave very similar symptoms
other than there was no smell of fuel and the engine kept going after landing.
Does that sound logical? In fairness, it will be handy to keep a diaphragm in stock
anyway so I don't mind picking one up.

Hi all-
I would agree with Mark on this; if you have the long range tanks with the modified
vent system fuel can migrate into the vent lines and cause flow issues;
especially after acro. Try blowing air (with fuel caps off of course) into the
belly ram air in tube on port side and ensure you can feel air at each bladder/tank.
And you can control feed from each tank, if you have that ability.
Need two people. Fuel smell in cockpit means some fuel may be in your fuel vent
loop next to your left elbow. It can still get in there even with a check
valve...dont ask me how. Not saying it couldnt be a carb issue but I would start
here.
Good luck- Hoot (CJ owner)

Where is the second diaphragm located?

My 2 cents worth: I personally use my 20+ yr old David Clarks in my CJ6.
Friends who ride in the back with their Bose, etc w/ noise cancelling tell
me they develop an unpleasant throbbing.
While I use Bose & Lightspeed headsets for work (KingAirs), my DC's are
ideal for the radial monsters.
Again, my 2 cents worth-
