Yes, we unfortunate Europeans are much more tightly controlled than you lucky guys. But categorically it is a European rule from EASA (our FAA) that the membranes (diaphragms) have a six year calendar life. It is fairly clear from the engine manual where they are, but to help I will ask Aerometal, our partner in Hungary, to send me photographs of the carburettor indicating exactly the parts that needs to be removed to change the membranes, and I will post it on the yak-list. But if you have a diaphragm/membrane failure, then after the engine has been shut down, leave the fuel on and the throttle slightly open, and you will almost certainly get fuel dripping down through the carburettor. If none comes out, then I would suspect a coil failure. I would also make the point that, very specifically, these diaphragms (and there are two in each carburettor) should be replaced at a maximum of every six years. The reason I ask is simply because when one of them tears, or fails, it does not fix itself and then you fly home. If all of a sudden you start running very rich , etc., etc., yes. Or if the engine stops running... as in it totally stops running .... yes, probably. But if it stops in flight for a few moments and then starts running again... or something like that, it could be electrical as in mag coils. That can often be very difficult to define. You probably know all this already, so ... sorry. CJ or Yak? 2 more cents. I agree. I use Lightspeeds and love them everywhere. Excep t the yak. I also notice that ANR do not work properly if the seal around the ear is p erfect. The Bose does not fit my big ears as well - thus Lightspeed. And if I wear glasses with thicker temple pieces over the ear it disrupts t he seal. I have an old pair of wire frame that do not disrupt the seal. Did you say you had a heavy smell of fuel in the cockpit when this occurred? A carb diaphragm leak is not going to give you a smell of fuel in the cockpit during flight, Level or aerobatic. Sucking air will cause the engine to lean out and fail too. So places to look are for places fuel can get into the cockpit. Also a mag coil failing as Mark said will cause engine hesitation. It is quite impressive when that happens. Usually 15 to 20 min into the flight and will occurs again in 15 to 20 min if the flight continues. Ive had coil failure in the past. This was similar other than the smell of fuel and the engine actually quit fully. Will have a look for leaks when we get it apart. -------- CJ and Yak-52 owner Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=487768#487768
