I ended up up putting 33 lbs of lead in my CJs tail.=C2- I filled a canva
s bag full of lead bird shot and put the bag in the very tail section.=C2
- The bag and bird shot takes the form of the compartment and is unmovabl
e.=C2- I can inspect the compartment occasionally by simply vacuuming out
the bird shot and removing the bag.=C2- Has worked well for 23+ years.
=C2- When I put on the M-14p I added shot to the bag and melted lead into
the tail skid.=C2- I believe the total ballast came to 50 something lbs.
=C2- My airplane flies with zero trim with full fuel, both seats occupied
and 50 lbs of bags.

Absolutely correct that nose heavy aircraft don't spin or snap as well as t

When the old radio equipment is removed from the rear compartment, most CJ'
s I have seen have between 25 and 50 lbs of lead/lead shot installed in the
tail to bring it back into CG.

Hi Motoadve,
Welcome to the wonderful world on Changs!
Based on what you are saying about the plane's behavior, you may be nose he
avy. Taking all of the vacuum tube avionics out from behind the second seat
may have moved the CG well forward. Are you also running out of trim durin
g approach?
I have read where several pilots have installed lead in the tail to reinsta
te the normal CG positions

Subject: | Desiccant experiment |
Here's the quasi-experiment I conducted on the desiccant in the air system
on my Nanchang CJ-6 airplane. This picture shows two things, desiccant qua
ntity and humidity level. The pink desiccant on the left has reached the e
nd of its useful life as a drying agent, while the desiccant on the right i
s new, deep blue and ready to absorb moisture. The next point is quantity..
.I use twice as much desiccant (left vs right) and half as many felt pucks
(4 instead of 8] as most people. Here are the data: fresh desiccant was in
stalled on 10 February and removed on 2 March to total 20 days. Total flig
ht time was 5.9 hours flown between 14 - 27 February or over 4 days. Averag
e high temp in Alabama for February 2019 was 64=C2=B0 and the average humid
ity was 67%. So the analysis and conclusion is two fold, first in this env
ironment, deep South high humidity, changing the desiccant about every 5 ho
urs seems to be about optimal and second, there might be a need for an addi
tional inline filter or maybe even better, installation of a high pressure
air filter and water separator such as on a scuba system or semi truck air
system.
Has anyone installed an additional filter or water separator on their airpl
ane? Results?

I use CEP-USA in-ear plugs with custom ear molds inside an Alpha Eagle dome, although
they are almost as effective in my HGU. I much prefer them to ANR in the
CJ and Yak.

I have chimed in on my affection for Lightspeed. And the inability to use ANR in
the yak or on a breezy. Yes you fly on a breezy, not in it.
I use a nice inexpensive Passive noise reduction on the breezy, but I also use
a Gibson and Barnes helmet w CEP in the yak. This works great.
