Subject: | Re: Electrical question |
Gill,
The unused switches can certainly be used for other applications. I have one assigned
the task of turning off and on an electric boost pump and another is used
for my strobes. I believe that these switches also have a built-in circuit
breaker. Was told that this is approximately 20 amps, but have not confirmed this.
It would be prudent to add an appropriate circuit breaker for each application
that the switch controls.

a switch for the alternator, a switch for the landing light and a switch
for nav and strobe lights. Is there any reason why these can't be rewired to
use the unused switches below? For example, can the alternator be wired to the
old generator switch? Can the light switches be rewired to use the other remaining
unused switches? I'm wondering if the amperage rating is wrong and that
is why they are on a separate panel.

One very simple suggestion I would throw in from my past
frustrations/experiences, having refurbed much of my CJ6's wiring: label
label label!
It's very helpful to add small identifying labels to each wire and wire
bundle for future reference, especially if it deviates from the standard
PLAAF wire diagrams.
Future mechanics and avionics techs will surely thank you!

I had similar issues with my CJ, happened after about 30mins flight time and adding
power smoothed it out. Problem became worse during subsequent flights and
it turned out to be failing mag coils. I couldnt repeat the issue on the ground
even after prolonged warmup and ground running.
How long into your flight before this occurred?
I removed the old mag coils, had them both rewound and it now runs stronger than
ever.
Just my thoughts.
Maybe do a few more over airfield flights for plus 30 mins and see if it happens
again.

That is a classic coil problem which will only manifest itself when the engine
is hot and the heat has totally penetrated the magneto and, more specifically
the coil. It is very difficult to get the magneto sufficiently hot to have this
partial failure on the ground. And the only solution is to change the coil!

Subject: | Re: Nose leg - NANCHANG - Shimmy issue |
I completely agree with Walt (out of balance tires), and have been pursuing shimmy
for over a year. I still get a little "bzzzttt" when touchdown at ~70knots,
so I keep the nose off until 60'ish.
I've statically balanced (no joy), dynamically balanced at a motorcycle shop (much
better), rebuilt the shimmy dampener complete with dunking under 5606 to remove
all bubbles, rebushed torque links, rebushed strut with new seals, checked
all pressures on all struts (went to max pressure on main struts to stop duckwalk
when carrying, ummm, heavier instructors) and tires, dynamically balanced
mains and set toe, new bearings and races. Whew. Everything feels incredibly
solid. But...
So, still hunting. Here's a few pics - the one with the cordless drill is a joke
pic! Used a Bridgeport knee mill and CNC lathe for all work.

Subject: | Re: Electrical question |
Gil / Warren,
These ZKC switch breakers come in various amperage, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 40.
Care must be taken to make sure the proper breaker amperage matches the
equipment being installed.

If I may ask, who rewound the coils?
Thx
