Was not the mags.
Intake tube on cyl 5 had a big hole, the drain tube broke and was sucking air.
Fixed that.
Now engine runs smoother than ever.

You don't mention the kind of manifold oil drain system that was used
and what actually had failed. But, in our experience, it is a mistake to
use the standard Russian manifold drain plug (I have no experience of
this on the Nanchang engine); drill it and tap it for an AN fitting.
This is because it is relatively thin aluminium and simply not designed
to be drilled and tapped. We make a much thicker plug to replace the
Russian one that has much greater strength and is designed to be tapped.

We change the complete intake tube =93 those ones with a very
small hole are simply too small to fit an appropriate AN fitting.
I attach photographs of the much thicker plugs that we manufacture.

And you might ask why there are no locking "castelations" on our thicker
nuts =93 the answer is simply that they are always going to be
used with an oil drain tube and the tube is what prevents it unscrewing
itself!

Subject: | Ground Compressor Repair Needs |
TGIF, Red Stars!
As Summer reluctantly embraces we aviators of the north, my latest dilemma
involves my Bauer 7,000lb compressor that I've used for years to fill my sc
uba tanks. Regrettably, it has decided to ride the pine. (It was no surpris
e...I noticed it spending considerable time after curfew with some RV guys.
) Anyway, I can't even find a shop that will consider options for repair, a
s apparently these high psi compressors are beyond the scope of many techs.
A suitable replacement would practically necessitate a less-informed versi
on of "Breaking Bad" on my part. I was just wondering what options are out
there that I haven't considered or thought-of. 'Not fond of the ol' bi-week
ly trip to the dive shop to fill up.
Thank you for any input!!
Tailwinds, healthy mags and tight pneumatics to all!!
