Subject: | CJ6 prop blade leakage |
Guys, I have noticed a heavy grease seeping from the propeller hub onto the blades
of on my CJ6. I assume there is a seal that needs to be replaced. Any info
would be greatly appreciated.

If you are talking about what I *THINK* you are .... at idle the sump return
pump will not be spinning fast enough to return all the oil back to the
tank. There should be a comment somewhere in the aircraft operating manual
that recommends that you run the engine up to about 60-70% (pulling that
number from memory) for about 30 seconds or so, before shut down. The same
applies to long sitting times at idle while waiting for the tower. Simply
run the engine up for 30 seconds or so, and problem solved.

The M14P manual warns against prolonged idling which could cause "oiling"
and probably spark plug fouling. If you are in this situation, forced to
idle/taxi for some 15 minutes or more, what's the best course of action?
Question for both scenarios - before a shutdown or before a takeoff.
Thanks.

Can anyone tell me which remote oil filter base is in the attached picture? Is
it the Sukhoi Airwolf setup?
Thanks.

Are you referring to Plug fouling ?
I see this quite often on an Auto converted M14PF. As soon as a see a cylinder
starting to go backwards CHT wise a run up is needed to clear the offending plug.
For me this is an issue any time their is extended taxi times and or holding before
take off.

First determine if there is oil inside the hub when you pull the prop hum dome
and piston. If there is, replace both the inner and outer seal on the piston.
Oil inside the hub will spew out on to the blade roots when the prop is spinning.
Oil inside the hub is caused by a weak inner piston seal.
Check your log books for the last time the hub was disassembled, cleaned and all
bearings and races regreased. If it hasnt been done in the last 200 hours, it
would be a good idea to do so.
Also check the log book to see if the collet seals have been replaced in the last
600-750 hours. Again, if there is no record of it being done, it would be recommended
they be replaced as well.

If anyone is doing such prop work in the Pacific NW area in the future, I'd
very much like to come and watch/assist... ?

Anyone got a functional spare they'd like to get rid of? My rear gauge doesn't
read O/T anymore, just maxes out high. Same as the Carb Temp if you've got one
of those you'd like to part with, too.
Thanks in advance,

Also it'll max out high if the wire is disconnected usually, so it may not even
be your gauge. I have both so we can test.

Thanks Ttail. Did you make the hoses & choose different fittings yourself? I saw
your setup in a different picture and it those pieces don't look like the standard
ones that come with the Airwolf kit.

Both of these guages rely on a temperature probe. An internal probe failure
typically results in a maximum reading as does an open circuit in the
connection plug or a broken wire.
Checking the engine oil temp. probe could be as simple as switching from oil
in to oil out since that is two different probes.
