Subject: | Pneumatic Rigid Line Replacement |
Hey, All!
I need to replace some problematic original Russian rigid air lines. I wou
ld like to do that with a more flexible aluminum tubing. Has anyone else do
ne this? And do you have any recommendations on what to use and where to ge
t it? Thanks so much=85 Fly safe!

Hi Rico; With no personal experience of the YAK 52 (or similar) I am assumi
ng your are referring to the general pneumatic system which on the CJ6 uses
alum. alloy tubing, mostly 6 mm and 8 mm OD with a wall thickness of 1mm.
Also assuming these use the same end flaring process as the CJ.
If all that is correct then it is a fair assumption that the tubing materia
l is an equivalent to the US std. 5052 alloy. I think we can assume with a
high degree of confidence that this is true for the CJ6. Another factor tha
t would tend to include the Yak series in this assumption is the fact that
both aircraft use the flare system for joint fitting. US std. 5052 is suppl
ied in the correct hardness to allow for excellent flares, sufficient stren
gth for low pressure systems and workability for
bending and forming.
In using the US std. 5052 tube as a replacement there are some things to co
nsider. For the 1/4" 5052 X 0.035":
1. Wall burst failure would be at lower pressure than the original 6 mm X 1
mm. due increased wall area and slightly reduced thickness. Probably not o
f major concern within the system pressure range. To ensure there is no red
uction there is a 0,050" wall thickness available.
2. Modification of metric nut to fit over - 4 AN tube sleeve requires very
careful analysis!
5052 tubing comes in 12 ft. lengths.
There is another 1/4" tubing available on the US market. It comes in roll f
orm, likely 3000 series alum. and should never be used in any aircraft syst
em. Too thin, weak and soft.
