    I=99ve never seen a specification for the heat range for either engine . 15 yrs ago when I first started experimenting with a compatible automotive spark plug, I looked at the condition of the original Russian and Chinese p lugs and determined by sight and by comparing to plug manufacture photo desc riptions, they were a very cold plug. As you already know, when the ceramic around the firing element is very black and sooty, especially on the upper c ylinders, it usually indicates a cold plug. So we began to experiment with C hampion 14mm spark plugs that had the same thread length (reach). When the C hampion plugs became difficult to source, we crossed them to NGK. That was t he NGK BR6HS. When you look inside a cylinder with either a Russian, Chinese or equivalent auto plug, every one of them had the electrode above the surface (inside th e spark plug hole) and nowhere near the surface of the combustion chamber. T o obtain complete combustion, the spark plug electrode should at the very le ast, be flush with the surface of the combustion chamber. Then, when a CHT p robe or two as on the rear #4 plug on an M14 on a Yak 52, the firing tip is p ulled even further away from the combustion chamber surface. We experimented with various heat ranges. On NGK plugs, the higher the numbe r (as in BR6HS) the colder the plug. If I remember correctly, we started wit h =9C8=99s=9D. They were way to cold as evident by the co lor of the ceramic and the harder starting. We tried 7=99s then 6 =99s. 6=99s gave us the best starting and burned much, much better as e vident of the ceramic around the firing element. A few years ago I started experimenting with the extended tip plug because o f the oil collecting in the lower cylinders. The theory was, why not do wha t Lycoming and Continental do when cylinders are burning more oil. That is, t hey recommend and extended tip spark plug such as an REM37BY, which has an e xtended tip. The result was the plug we use and recommend today, the NGK 702 2/BPR6HS. The =9CP=9D is the extended tip and the heat range is t he =9C6=9D. It burns clean as evident by the color of the cerami c around the firing tip. Because of the original piston to cylinder wall clearances, both the M14 and Housai engines were designed to consume oil. What we=99ve come up wi th is a spark plug that works much better in these engine cylinders at the h eat range we=99re using. So you ask, does it meet the manufacturers heat range spec? Quite frankly, I don=99t know. But what I do know is I think we=99ve significant ly improved the operation and longevity of the ignition system on these engi nes while reducing the operating cost. With well over a thousand of the automotive conversation kits sold all over t he world (including Russia) in the last 14+ years, I suspect we may have hit on something that benefits the community.
