    Subject: Cylinder sizes with M 14 engines
    Further to my earlier posting about this, I thought it might be helpful for people to know little more about the cylinder sizes. Importantly, the new cylinders have a layer of nitride on the cylinder =93 this is a hard metal/ceramic compound that is fused onto the cylinder wall, but in a very thin layer. This thinness causes a significant problem in that it only gives a limited ability to have over-sized cylinders before cutting through the nitride layer. So the official dimensions are: Standard cylinder diameter: 104.98 mm First oversize (R1): 105.10 mm Second oversize (R2) 105.18 mm. So you can see that the additional oversize cylinders are actually very little increase in diameter. Our view is that there is sufficient nitride layer to make a third oversize possible without cutting through the nitride into the base steel. But in the long term it is clear that we will need to be thinking of extending the lives of the cylinders. A problem with nitriding is that the cylinder head in aluminium has to be removed in order to re-nitride the cylinder, so this is impractical. The other solution which we are now adopting is to coat the internal cylinder walls with Nikasil =93 a product not similar to nitride, but widely used in the automotive industry and with the advantage that it can be applied to cylinders without removing the cylinder head.     The Motorstar Factory in Romania still produces new cylinders. They have had some success in installing new cylinder barrels as well. They are currently working on the Nikasil process. Barretts has been using the Nikasil process as well. It has an advantage they resist corrosion much better than nitrided cylinders.
