All the Yaks had the same oil cooler which when new and with a standard
360 hp engine is more than adequate. However what people don't realise
is that, over a period of time the inside of the cooler becomes coated
with a layer of hard oil residue which acts as a very good insulator and
prevents the cooler from working efficiently. People then think that
they can simply wash out this residue with a solvent like petrol, but
after so many years, there's no way that this will remove everything. So
the only way to ensure that the cooler can actually do its job is to
send it to a specialist business who have industrial ultrasonic cleaning
machines which vibrate the residue out of the coolers.
There is also a 50% larger cooler =93 actually the gearbox oil
cooler for the MiL 17 helicopter which has exactly the same fittings as
the smaller Yak cooler and we have sold a number of these to Sukhoi
owners where they are dealing with tuned engines of over 400 hp. But not
a simple conversion since inevitably the cowlings need to be modified
for the cooler which is physically somewhat larger. Richard.
