When my previous HS-6A's supercharger stopped turning in flight (bearing failure), the engine continued to run at reduced power. After divert it would not start during ground troubleshooting, apparently flow disruption that didn't stop engine was too much to overcome during a start attempt...once we were able to check the accessary drive screen there was plenty of metal. If it starts, I'm with Richard, I'd suspect indication related failure...but might not hurt to check the screen anyway for peace of mind. Rich Sent from my iPhone

    Subject: no MAP boost
Some years ago when we were working very closely with Vedenyeev in Voronezh, Russia, we came up with the idea for a significantly improved and more powerful engine which I funded, and which we called the M 14 R. The big difference was a completely new impeller and diffuser in the supercharger which we had designed by Lulkya, who make the engines for the big Sukhoi fighters. This was a dramatic improvement over the 60 year old impeller with single-plane curvature, design of the M 14 P. Additionally we turned it at 11.5 times engine speed rather than 10.4 times engine speed of the M 14 PF. Sadly the engine was never properly developed, although it developed over 470 hp and clearly the potential for much more. But the new impeller and the added gearing put much more strain on to the supercharger drive gears, and in practice a number of them failed. The relevance of this is that, as Rich says, the engine continues to run but at reduced power, and in this case quite a lot of reduction! I believe we sold five of these engines, and at least two of them are still working, but I'm the first to admit that the concept was excellent but the execution poor. Having said that the owner of one of the M 14 R engine sent it to Aerometal last year for overhaul, and we made the decision that we would examine the engine in detail to establish what were the weak parts and with a lot of work did that, so we now have all the engineering details we need as part of our plan to put a totally revised M 14 R into production. But there are a lot of parts to be made, and we are snowed under with "everyday" overhauls but it is our plan to do it this year. If anyone is interested, please email us and I can send photographs of the M 14 R supercharger impeller and diffuser! Richard.
