Reading through my old document from 2014 and CJ Maint. Vol I, Appendix VII, the CD-5 mag setting resulted in total advance applicable to the octane rating of the fuel the Chinese had at the time. The M-14P total advance is a lower value, using the fixed magneto that limits advance to 22-24 degrees by piston. ADJUSTING the setting of the CD-5 to achieve the 24 degrees resulted in about a two degree retarded value from what the Chinese used on a slower turning engine, using lower octane. These are conservative numbers, given the wide range of altitudes and air density encountered during flight. Using manual leaning, the Huosai engine can be adjusted to conditions by the pilot. On the M-14P, the carb settings do the adjustments... how accurately was the carb was set?? Leaning for max efficiency on flat engines differs from radials because radials distribute the mixture more evenly to each cylinder. Pays your money, takes your chances. It is not quite so simple =93 but the attached paper might help! This translates to around 22-24* BTDC on the crank. Assuming an M-14p motor with CD-5 (Chinese)magnetos stamped 25*, what is the proper angle on the prop BTDC? According to Craig Payne=C3=A2=82=AC=84=A2s chart for this configuration it suggests 8.8* BTDC on the crank and 5.8* BTDC on the prop. I don=C3=A2=82=AC=84=A2t understand this figure. Very good document Richard, thanks! Do you have such a document for the Chinese Housai?
