Subject: | CJ-6 Magneto Problem??? |
Last week after a normal flight I fueled up my CJ and upon start the prop t
urned backwards for a number of blades and then reversed and started runnin
g very roughly and died. Restarting engine a number of times it kept backfi
ring and shutting down. Would not run on both mags. One last try and upon
engine firing up I switched quickly to the right mag and the engine ran f
ine on the one mag. I taxied to my hangar on the right mag and tried left
mag and engine backfired sputtered and died.
Pulled covers off the right and left mags and inspected for problems. None
observed. Both rotors seemed to be correctly timed. Rotors lined up on timi
ng marks with #4 cylinder at TDC. Put mags back together and tried to start
engine, no joy.
I have never had an engine start and the prop turn in the wrong direction.
I have owned my CJ for over 12 years and no problems ever like this.
Is it possible some damage was done inside the left mag when the prop was r
eversed upon first start?
