Hi folks
I am new to both this list and Zenair, having just bought a CH601HDS
yesterday. It is around 5 years old with 300 or so hours on it, and I think it
is
a terrific aircraft. I do have one problem with it though that somebody may
have met before.
The ASI seems to read around 15kts high all the time. The aircraft has no
external static pressure source so it gets its reference from inside the cockpit
at the ASI instrument. The previous owner says that this is the cause of the
problem, as the pressure in the cabin is significantly lower at speed, but I am
not sure this is correct. As I am coming to the CH601 with a totally Cessna
background for the last 20 years, the airspeed indication at point of flare is
quite critical on the short narrow strip where I keep it.
Has anybody met this before?
Regards

Yes, the ASI will always read high in this case. 15kts seems like a bit
much though. Perhaps the ASI is also inaccurate. As long as the ASI is
consistent and you have the correct approach speeds, using this ASI, this
should be a problem. Since it is an experimental you are perfectly legal to
replace the ASI and/or install a proper static system.

I have read reports of people having their shirt sleeve "sucked" out the
canopy joint and have had the same experience myself. This would tend to
indicate a lower pressure outside the canopy would it not?
I have dual (balanced) static ports at the rear fuse and still have -5 kts
indicated (probably the instrument)

Yes, Richard, we have all run into this. Most have put an external source
for static pressure. Mine is near the tail, and now seems to be reading
around -3 mph. However, if you will just stall the airplane and determine
your stall speed, then you can fly safely either way I think.

Last summer I installed a heater core in the nose..in line on the heater loop that
comes out the top of the thermostat housing..looping back to the pump. Now
that winter is here I have trouble getting up to temp. I have a question: If
I use a shut off valve to cut off the flow thru this heater core on cold days,
will it harm the pump in any way? And will this affect the functioning of the
thermostat. Do any of you know what kind of thermostat the Stratus has in it?
On the stock Stratus this loop goes uncooled and unrestricted..any good reason
for that?

You do need an external static source to get accurate readings.

This line is the bypass line. It allows some coolant to flow even when the
thermostat is closed. It brings coolant that is warmed by the engine up to
the thermostat in order to warm it up so it will open properly when the
engine gets up to temperature. If your engine is slow to warm up, you may
have to block the air flow through the heater core until the engine warms up
and the thermostat opens. You may also have to block off part of the air
flow through the main radiator to reduce the rate of cooling in order to
keep the engine temperature up.

That's it! More than 1,500 hours of building time and
nearly 4 years and I'm fed up with those Sharpie
(ultra fine point) permanent markers!!! ;-)
It seems that they are made for a single use only.
Anytime I come back in the workshop and try to use the
marker again, it seems I must draw circles for 10
minutes before it draws anything.
Is there a simple way to rescucitate these pens and
make them useful for more than a few uses?
Thanks and happy new year!
Michel

I don't know about resuscitating them. However, make sure the cap is
secure and it's stored tip down and it should last a lot longer.

Hi, Michel
I bought a set of 5 Sharpies three years ago (before Nov 99, at least), and am
still
using them, no problems. Just bought a second set because a couple ran dry
(completely). I keep the cap on when not in use, and store them verticaly, point
up
or down, it does not matter. Sometimes I have to trace a short line (<1 cm) top
get
them started, but that's all.
Note: temperature in my workshop (in basement) is always above 17 C.
I erase Sharpie traces with nail polish remover. Maybe it can also be used to jump
start the little suckers...?
Regards, and have a great New Year

Thanks Carlos... may be my garage is a bit too cool.
For erasing the Sharpie traces, try lacquer thinner
from Canadian Tire. Works very well and most probably
cheaper than the nail polish remover.

Gang,
I'm just getting into this whole airplane deal, at the tender age of 45.
First thing I've ever gotten into that my wife really doesn't want me to do.
Racing motorcyles? No problem. Flying airplanes? She's convinced I want to
make her a widow. Anyway, I digress. Watching this forum for a few days (and
reading Michel's post about having 1500 hours into his plane already), I'm
wondering about the time estimates on Zenith's site. You guys are actually
doing the building, how realistic are they?
If I do actually buy an XL, I suspect I'll be doing a turbo Subaru
conversion, as I live in Colorado, with base altitude of about 5k feet, with
12,000' mountains 20 minutes east. How many of you are using the Subarus?
Whose conversion? I'm not worried about the turbo end of it, that's what I
do for a living.
Lots of questions, I'll have more as I go along, so bear with me. Any and
all advice/input welcomed!

I would guestimate that I spent 800-900 hours building my 601HDS. I stopped
logging at 600 hours because it was almost done, and I stopped carrying
builders insurance. This is the first plane I ever built. In fact, this
was the first time I ever really built anything.
I have the Stratus Subaru engine. It isn't turbo, but I'm happy with it so
far. I have had my plane up to 15k feet and still climbing. I would have
gone higher, but I didn't have any oxygen.

The ink seems to "harden" on the tiny flexible tip. Lay the pen against the
metal at about a 30 degree angle, push slightly to bend (not break) the tiny
flexible tip and rotate the pen barrel 720 degrees (that's two revolutions
for you Canadians) while holding the tip in a slightly "flexed" position.
This seems to "crack" the hardened ink on the tip and allows fresh stuff to
start flowing. Keeping the cap on tight has never helped, they "harden"
every time. I can't accomplish much building airplanes, but free advice is
never in short supply.

Hello Bill,
I built a 601HD (from a kit), so I can't speak for the XL. As a
reference though it took me 650 hours (400 advertised), but I do have a
full instrument panel and a couple others modifications from the factory
plans.
I have a Stratus engine, normally aspirated. Again, HD not XL, but I
have no problems with service ceilings or runway lengths. It still only
took about 1/3 the runway at Leadville, although it was a cold day.
