At Sun 'n Fun Nick Heintz located a point on the rear fuselage where
Chris recommends placing dual static ports - one on either side tied
together with a T fitting: about 1' aft of the trailing edge of the
wing and about 1.5' - 2' above the lower longeron. This seems to work
fine for me - no variation of ASI during hard slips or any other
attitude I've yet experienced. I'll check the exact location when I'm
at my airplane today.

It wasn't in a crate.
It wasn't wrapped in bubble wrap.
It wasn't even in a carton box filled with styrophoam peanuts.
It did not come with assembly instructions or a User's Guide.
It does not even require batteries.
But it is here and ready to use:
Just get off the chair and start using your brand new New Year!
Here are my wishes to fellow Listers (including myself, of course):
May the rivet lines and rivet pitch agree all the time;
May ZAC replies to your questions (continue to) be timely;
May your screw-ups be self-correcting (have you committed one of these yet?!),
so
you don't need to call ZAC;
May the part you just cut never be too small;
May the chair under the part you just drilled through be the one destined to the
trash, not the antique your wife loves;
May you always have enough material and hardware to continue working through the
night/weekend/holiday;
May all parts and assemblies be plumb and level (except when they shouldn't);
May all list replies have the irrelevant parts of the original text deleted;
May all web lists be as courteous and friendly as this one;
May Steve Freeman find the time to reactivate his (very nice) web site.... ;o)
May stuck builders find the motivation to get with their projects.
For those already flying:
May the winds always be tailwinds - except on landing and take-off;
May you always have more gas in the tank than the necessary to get back home;
May the bad weather be elsewhere;
May the runway be real wide - so 701 drivers can brag they landed across it, as
opposed to lengthwise;
May all fly-ins occur under fair weather.
And, above all, much health, peace and hapiness throughout the New Year for all
of
you, your families and friends.

I had not heard about Sebastian being ill. Hope everything works out for
him.
As to difficulties with the ZAC drawings I must admit I have been
frustrated with the manual layout. I am building a 601HDS from a kit. I
usually find that if I stop and read further ahead and layout the pieces it
all makes since. Also when I have had questions the factory has been very
responsive to my questions.
My father and I have been building for two years and are now into the
forward fuselage.

Subject: | Re: ASI accuracy |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Greg Ferris" <ferret@wmtel.net>
With my plane, I put a static port on each side of the fuselage forward of
the wings. This gives good readings at cruise speeds, but very poor
readings at slow speeds (20+ mph high at stall against GPS). I'm guessing
the airflow at high angles of attack is somewhat disconnecting off the
curvature of the bottom of the cowling; making the static ports ineffective.
If I vent the instruments to the cockpit, I get high readings at cruise
speeds, but reasonably accurate readings at slow speeds. Since slow speeds
are where the ASI is most important, that is how I left it for now.
I have considerred buying a combination pitot/static tube from ACS&S, but
haven't gotten to it yet.
I put 4.1 hours on yesterday; the plane is an absolute blast to fly. The
takeoff and climb performance is great, and it nice and solid for just
cruising. The 912 is smooth as well as being surprisingly fuel efficient.
I've got about 20 hours of flight time on it so far; I can't wait to fly off
the other 20 so I can break the leash and go somewhere. The plane is so
easy to fly and simple, 40 hours of flight test time is tremendous overkill.

Have you tried these guys?
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=167
Pretty hard to beat at $29.
I bought one of these shear/brake/rollers from them when it was on sale
for $269. REAL handy if you're scratch building.

I have a 164, 110hp engine I am selling. I started the
conversion by WW manual. It is assembled to having the
heads installed and torqued. The heads were redone by
Pine Street Automotive in Lodi, new valves, guides.
New pistons, bearing, wrist pins, balanced rods,
resleeved cylinders......all parts bought from Corvair
Underground. Have all the parts to finish assembly,
bell housing already cut, great project for someone to
finish. Also have parts for rear starter setup. I am
just looking to get my investment back. $$1300.00 plus
shipping.
