I hate to sound stupid here, but can anyone give me any information on
Static ports? My CH-300 does not have a static port. All of my instruments
are just ported behind the instrument panel. Is this bad? Should I order a
static port and connect my instruments to it?
Thank you for any advise you may have to offer.

This system is fine as long as your instruments are reading accurately
(which depends upon the static air pressure inside your cockpit). If you
are happy with the indications, and they don't change signficantly each time
you open the fresh air vents, etc... then K.I.S.S.! just like Chris designed
it.
With the 601 this method has proven to be inaccurate - must be reduced
static pressure in the cabin as the ASI reads significantly higher than
true.

Jeff: A static port may change your readings: My ercoupe was vented into the
cockpit and when you opened the canopie in flight the airspeed would jump 10
mph. Altimeter also. I just knew I had to change my approach speeds when I
was topless. Jack Russell

If you don't use a good static system you will find that your air speed
will read much higher than it actually is due to the lower pressure inside
the cabin. This makes for a greater amount of pressure in the air speed
indicator between the pitot and the static. Thus the higher reading. The
best setup I believe is a pair of ports on the sides behind the wing three
feet or more. Connect them to a T and then to the static system. Also you
should provide an accessible moisture trap so that you can drain moisture
that may accumulate in the line so that it won't freeze and disable the
system. You could use a third static port on the bottom of the plane. On
the other hand, you may enjoy seeing a higher reading. The ZAC factory
planes I've seen don't use an outside static source.

Well, my CH640 plans arrived and you can read my first impressions of the
plans on my website at www.matthewmucker.com.
I wish I had better things to say. To the other CH640 builders, did you get
a CD ROM of assembly manuals? If so, did the browser interface work for
you? It's not a good sign when the home page from the CD is full of broken
links to images and many of the links don't work. It's quite obvious that
nobody at Zenair tested the CD (except perhaps on the computer on which the
content was developed).
When the manuals ship on the CD, that's not a good sign.
Is there an overview of the building process anywhere on the CD? Something
that would indicate the order in which the assemblies are to be built?
Thanks,
-Matt

Hey mathew,
Dude...I've never seen the CD but I have experience building CD Rom
applications and what not. I can't help you with the broken links but if you
still want to read through the information here is what you can do.
Put in the CD and it will want to run right off the bat, it may even want to
have something installed depending on what is on the CD. When the "home
page" loads up close it down.
Goto "my computer" on your computer, then right click on your CD Rom and
choose "Explore", that will open up the folder structure for you, once that
is open you will be able to read the folder names, and from that *if their
naming conventions are clear* begin exploring the information that you need.
Hope this helps!

Morgan great advice for Matt, but if you look at his website, he has a good
handle on HTML and file placement. Since the CD from Zenair is supposed to
be in HTML then we can just consider it ANOTHER SCREW UP OF MATHIEU Heintz.
I have great respect for Zenith, Chris Heintz and all of his children except
for Mathieu. Anything he seems to touch just goes for shit and the lies he
tells are just a bad smear on the Company's face. I could easily ramble for
another half a page but it would do no service to a good company. Suffice
it to say if you have no choice and must deal with Mathieu make sure you
have done your homework!

Morgan,
Thanks.. I've been exploring the content. Much of it is good content, you
just have to hunt for it.
Methinks the content was produces with FrontPage and nobody bothered to test
it on a computer not running the FrontPage server extensions. Kinda sad
when the homepage is full of broken image links!
If I were a beginner at either computers or hadn't heard good things about
Zenith, I'd really, really worry after seeing that CD ROM.
Still, if anyone's gone before me and deciphered the good stuff from the
fluff on the CD ROM, please email me!

Hello, I had the same problem with the CD and since I own Modem Madness

and will send that back to Zenith so that they can get it to all of you.

Thank you all for your GREAT input, I have tested my airspeed and have found
that it is VERY accurate the even with the static port being inside the
cockpit. We have flown with our friends and compared our reading to what
they had when flying beside me and we were reading the same airspeed. I
also checked against my GPS which was showing ground speed, compensated for
the head wind and was very close so I think we are ok to leave it alone.
Thanks again for all your help guys.

Matt,
Can you comment on the quality of the plans? I am planning on purchasing a
640 kit but was going to order the plans first. I've never seen plans or
assembly instructions from Zenith. Can you work with just the plans or is
the manual a must?

Subject: | CH 701 wingtip measurements? |
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Ed Kramer" <edkramer@prodigy.net>
I almost have the left wing completed on my 701 and I am currently working on the
wing tip. I've encountered a bit of a problem with the measurements and would
like to bring it to your attention (page 7-V-9 of the 4th edition drawings
dated 03/2002). Here's what I've noticed: I laid out all the coordinates on the
skins and plotted the line to later be cut. It was obvious something wasn't
right. I talked to Nick at ZAC and he said the newer drawings (my version) have
updated measurements that should be accurate and the previous drawings may be
inaccurate. I then laid out all the coordinates again from the previous 4th
edition drawings (older version dated 07/2001) in which some of the measurements
were different. I've found the measurements in the older drawings to be accurate
and they formed the proper shape.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's been there, done that, or anyone
who might be going there.

Most citys have an automotive upholstery shop.
Could you take the wooden seatbacks there and
have them do it.
I looked at a ch300 in Kitchener a couple years back
to try it on for size. I met the owner there and he was
replacing the seats just back from being redone like this.

Both wings/tips/etc done on 701 kit #4433.
Ran into some of the same problems. Okay, guys, this is probably NOT an
original idea: I went to Office Max (Wal-Mart, K-Mart, office supply, etc is
okay, too) and bought several sheets of "poster board". This stuff is white
on both sides, just almost exactly the same thickness as the .016" skin
material. It is about 2 feet by 3 feet in size. (somebody jump in here and
add the metric measurements -- its too cold to walk out to the shop to
measure it myself).
This stuff is about like a giant post card -- and you can make a mistake with
sissors that masking tape will fix. It works really well for the wing tips
and front sides/front top pieces. If you make the posterboard fit well, you
can then lay it over the aluminum and mark around, cut, cleco.

I found that making patterns out of cardboard really saved me a lot of time
and material. And as Zed says, if you cut the pattern too small, some tape
and more cardboard will fix the pattern. I made patterns for the wing tips,
the seats (especially good here as both were slightly different), my home
made cowling, etc. On my seats I tapped scraps of .016 together to make a
final pattern so it could be rolled to fit the seat curvature.
