Hello List,
I'm getting a 601 DX (German Version of XL) with a 912S Engine.
I'm interested in getting a good (light and accurate) Monitor to watch the following
functions:
EGTs
Maybe CHTs using a ring sensor
Coolant temp
Oil temp pressure
OAT
RPM
Manifold Pressure
Fuel Flow (with GPS connection)
I looked at the EDM 800 from JPInstruments, it does all that(and much more ofcourse)
but if I want to use it as a primary
instrument for RPM + MAP, would rather have them as analoge display. They seem
to be developing the EDM900 too but THAT
is Megabucks!!
I also looked at the VM-1000 from Vision Micro Systems... looked very interesting,
seems to have everything I want. I wrote to
them. They replied in... sort of... one line, saying they presently don't have
anything for the ROTAX 912 S !
Anybody with any suggestions?
The stuff doesn't have to be TSOd

"Tremendous safety issues" ???
Without trying to sound combative (email limitation).... I think this is
pretty strong language for a 10 mph error, and similarly small increment on
the altimeter...

This is part new services offered and thank you to those that sent me
pictures.
I was the one that posted the question early about great panels, and would
like to thank you that have sent me pictures of and links to great panels
(and a lot good looking aircraft too.)
I thought a follow up on the first question was appropriate.
The 601 XL panel is smaller that the GlaStar and Kitfox molded panels that I
have built up. The smaller size of means that the instruments need to better
planed out during build up keeping wasted panel space down to a minimum.
Properly molded panels with their curves and lines naturally enhance the
different instrument clusters to make better use of the available space.
The normal molded panels seem to me to be very limiting. They probably
looked great for the first one and fit the instrumentation and layout just
right. Subsequent builders that bought the panel and fit there own
instruments end up with a less than perfect look because the panel was not
tailored for their instrumentation and layout preference. There is a WIDE
verity of panel layouts and instrumentation in the Zenith family of
aircraft. In fact more verity than any other kit, this to me is exciting
and entertaining, I like looking at variety.
So I am extending to you my services of tailoring a molded panel for your
instruments and layout preferences. I love building and being creative so
here are a few ideas and new twists I came up with last night.
For a lighted panel I use the UMA light wedges and their lighted strips.
The lighted strips can be put behind engraved clear plastic for switch
placarding (for non lighted placards it is best to reverse engrave them).
This normally sticks above the panel surface 1/8, even with chamfered edges
they collect dust and dont have that finished look. With the molded panel
I can put this flush.
Another look I dont care for is the aluminum piece the instruments are
mounted to that has dozens of screws on the perimeter, Why not bond the
aluminum to the back of the panel were needed for a strength doubler.
A lot of people that I do work for want the Room for expansion. Given the
direction of expansion, usually from basic instrumentation to full gyro, I
can make provisions so that the up grade is as simple as possible.
Fun with glass and doing it right!

I've tried to get tech support from ZAC on whether I'm designing my fuel
system correctly, but haven't been able to get a straight answer yet. So,
I'm thinking there has to be some builder out there that has faced the
same situation, or is more experienced than me on fuel systems.
I have four fuel tanks, two in each wing (no header tank), all with
independent lines running into the cabin (per ZAC's plans). They also
provided me with an Andair selector valve capable of switching to each of
four tanks independently. Given that info, here's what I wrote ZAC:
"Just want to clarify: The four fuel lines will run independently to the
selector valve mounted on the center console, on a slight uphill slope
(since the valve is higher than the tank outlets), then a single main
line from the valve down to the floor-mounted gascolator, then continuing
through the back-up electric pump which is also mounted on the cabin
floor, then the fuel line slopes back up to the engine. Is that correct?"
Does this sound like a workable system? Any problems that could bite me
down the road? Thanks!

I believe you should keep all the lines going down hill until the electric
fuel pumps going to the gascolator. I managed to do this and I feel pretty
good about it. My gascolator is mounted to the bottom of the front side of
the firewall and I used an Al tube through all of the ribs at a slight
angle so that it comes in to the cabin above the floor. My valve is on the
floor and has a rod up to the console where the lever is handy and visible.
However, I only have two wing tanks. You will have more lines than I
have. Good luck in getting this worked out. Cleone, 601HD, 177 hours.

It would be better to have the lines run downhill all the way to the valve
and then to the gascolater with the gascolater being at the lowest point in
the system then run uphill to the pumps, filter and engine. There should be
no local low spots in the lines where water may collect. This is so any
water that gets in the fuel system will settle out in the gascolater and not
anywhere in the lines. I suggest putting the valve on the floor and if
necessary, making an extension for the handle. If you can't avoid local low
spots in the lines, you should install a quick drain fitting at each low
spot and check them before each flight.
Also your back-up pump should be as low as possible, it's not a good ideal
to suck fuel uphill so your planned location for this pump sounds good.

Hi Mike,
The only point that I see with a little of doubth (sp?), is the part of
the line where it goes up to the valve and then down to the
gascolator... there is a place for a bubble that could give problems,
on the other side, as is a low wing airplane, always will work with the
pumps (engine and aux.), they will take care of any air in the lines.
When you get your plane flying, it will be a good advise to take off
and land with the gasoline from a tank with the most amount of gas.
Making that tank always the same one: First to fill and last to use...
