Hey Phil, "gun drilling" of the aluminum main gear is simply two holes
drilled in the gear, before they are bent, for the brake fluid to run through
so you have no external brake lines. The biggest advantage is that you cannot
snag a brake line & rip it off during a take off or landing (hence loose your
brakes). This is far more likely to happen in "Bush" type runway
environments. It also looks much cleaner/neater.

Would anyone have the K&N air filter P/N for the Rotax 912S? I have searched
but can't find it.
Thanks

Does anyone out there have the pinout description for a Collins TDR
950 transponder? Thanks for your help!

When I was a kid, all I saw were tail draggers converted to floatplanes.
For those non-tail dragger pilots, let me tell you that wheel landings
in a tail dragger are a piece-o-cake.

I would like to know from any of you who made their
own canopy arms (XL model).
Did you have to disassemble or take special care with
the latch casing before welding it to the steel plate?
And before welding the lever extension to the lever?
The guy who does my welding is concerned about
changing the tempering of the springs (or even melting
them).
Thanks
Michel

Welding latches in place
August 28 An order was placed with Wicks for 1/16-inch cable and housing,
1/16" nicopress sleeves, engine mount bolts, cable stops etc.
A review of the drawing 6E4, finds reference for placing the rear bow
parallel to 6F12-1, which cleared up the angle intended for the socket
tubes. The latches were clamped to the plate 5mm clear of the square tube
and flush with the top. Latch action was not functional until the latch was
lowered on the plate to within inch of the bottom edge. This, with the
striker engaged, puts a 1/8 inch gap between the longeron and the canopy
tube. This is noted in recent pictures of the XL in the Experimenter and it
would allow adding a weather strip on the bottom of the canopy tube to seal
it. The latches were tack welded in place and rechecked for function.
Welding was done with a ready water hose on the floor near the garage door.
The first TIG weld was on the bottom edge of the latch to the plate and
inch long. The welded latch was walked to the hose and a narrow stream of
water was directed at the springs inside the latch and then the rest of the
latch was soaked not quenched. The latch was air-dried by compressor and
welding continued on a second part of the lower flange to the plate and a
repeat of the cooling treatment followed. The gap between plate and top
flange was welded along its length and again more water on the springs first
and then air. After all was secure, the spring action was still strong and
intact. The canopy tubes were reassembled to the plane and latch action was
found to be reliable.
August 29 The striker plates were marked for position and drilled to a 5/32
for A5 clecos. The holes were placed closer to the steel edge than center
because of the requirement for eventually placing the A3 holes in the
longerons at a 10mm edge to center distance.
Michel,
Above perhaps excerpts from section 4 of my journal will help. Yes, the
springs need protection
but you can do it with a little care. Position is also very critical.

OK I'll toss in my 2-crowns worth:
Once on the floats, the aircraft will fly the same, but mounting the
floats will be slightly harder. If XL, then build the fuselage with the
tricycle main gear structure as well as the tail dragger structure, then
you have a rear attach point. The front attach point can be the engine
mount (weld pick-up tangs on the bottom like the 701 mount) or use the
front main gear (weight penalty). If you want amphibs, then you can
order our floats with built-in nosewheels. But you have more weight,
less rough-field capacity, and more forward CG shift.
Incidentally, we fly the first 601XL tail dragger in 2 weeks.
Cheers,
CHIP
