--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Larry Bohannon" <lbohannon1@mindspring.com> Hi all, I have been following this list since mid December when I ordered a 701 complete kit. I just got back home to Georgia last Sunday afternoon after attending the factory workshop, where I picked up my kit. I have already screwed up. I built the Stabilizer skeleton which came out excellent. Then riveted the skin on the bottom (cambered)side as per manual and made cutout in rear 15mm overhang for center bracket. Turned stab over to strap down and skin top (flat) side.As i was pulling with straps noticed the leading edge of skin camber was off and then realized the skin had a TOP and BOTTOM side and i had put it on wrong side.It looks like I can pull it tight enough to have it lay down against the ribs. Should I go ahead and do this or scrap the whole stab and start over?Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks. Larry Bohannon STOL 701 # 5040 Winder, Georgia

The old will come off by drilling out the rivets (easy) and use the old skin as a template for the holes in the new skin. Welcome to the club of 701s.... making mistakes like this happens to everyone.. you get better and more careful as you go along... won't tell you the stuff I screwed up along the way!.. but laugh it off.. eventually itll all come together! --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Scott Laughlin" <cookwithgas@hotmail.com> Hi Larry: I'm glad to hear you made it back home safely with your U-haul! I was building the 601xl rudder behind you at the rudder-building workshop. I had a great time! If I were in your predicament, I would look at the plans carefully. I bet you can salvage the skin. I looked at the assembly manual for your airplane. The whole assembly looks like it was pre-bent and is not symmetrical, so you may have to remove it and try to put it on the right way. If there are some holes that do not match up on the side you already drilled, and they are far enough away from a rib, you may be able to put a thin plate under the skin, drill and rivet to fill the holes (check with Nick or Sebastian on this). I think I'll save all my trimmings for extra srips for this purpose. You should be able to back-drill through the ribs where you already have holes after you turn it back over. Zenith had a nice, small right-angle drill for this and you might want to get one. I would make a plan, then fax it to Zenith for approval first, however if you make any changes. Glad to hear you have begun your project. I had such a great time in Mexico last week. Nick and Sebastian and Roger were great hosts (Linda and Shirley were great too). If anyone is lurking about this board and undecided about building, I recommend the Zenith workshop. $300 and you come home with lots of experience and a rudder to your airplane. Plus a demo flight! If you are really undecided, pay $100 for the experience to help someone. Well worth it. Larry, I hope it works out that you don't have to buy another skin, but from looking at the manual, I bet you can salvage it. Take care, Scott Laughlin 601XL - Rudder Complete Omaha, Nebraska ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Larry Bohannon" <lbohannon1@mindspring.com> Subject: Zenith-List: 701 stab skin messup --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Larry Bohannon" <lbohannon1@mindspring.com> Hi all, I have been following this list since mid December when I ordered a 701 complete kit. If you have some holes which seem a little big as a result, use a larger rivet. T'm builsing the 601xl so this advice may not be applicable to the 701. Anyway- Good luck!! Al Young Do Not archive

I must agree..the time lag between letters compared with the instant nature of 'net communications makes the letter outdated news by the time we get it . I continue just in case there is some critical piece of information that applies to my safety or some big building change...but in that case we should all get that info gratis - and QUICKLY - without having to "opt - in" for a subscription. Much of the "news" in the letter is based on internet exchanges that occurs here or elsewhere. I like to get Chris' input but it should be a part of the kit purchase package - and available by internet - or by subscription letter if one does not have internet access. This is one of my few peeves about the Zenith kit program Chris Carey N601BZ HDS Richmond, VA

First, the letter is of great value to those who do not spend their building time on a computer and wish to have something to refer to in the hangar or on the night stand. Second, it is not a "Money Grab" by Zenith, the publishers are an interested couple in Hartford, Wisconsin, who I'm sure will soon own everything in Wisconsin not owned be EAA (that's an exaggeration and a joke, for the uneducated) from the fortune they make of the subscriptions.
