--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Ed Kramer" <edkramer@prodigy.net> List, I've always got quick and accurate results from Zenith's Tech Support. Yesterday, at 3:30 in the afternoon I sent an email to ZAC regarding the pitot tube installation and had an answer 2.5 hrs. later. --> Zenith-List message posted by: "Larry Bohannon" <lbohannon1@mindspring.com> Hi Ya'll, Thanks to all who responded privately and on this list to help solve my stab skin messup.I think I have it solved. This is a great list.I even had a call from a fellow 701 builder who lives close to me.Also, I e-mailed Zenith about midnight after I realized my mistake and got a reply by noon the next day.Nick offered to send me a new skin for free if I would pay the $40 crate fee and shipping of about $70.This is a good company to work with.Glad I bought a Zenith.I had a great time at the workshop and a great demo flight. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Gary Gower <ggower_99@yahoo.com> That is true, is dificult to have so many people from so many places (all over the world) and keep the list focused most of the time in the subject. Not to mention, keep it spam free and ofense free. This thing is only possible with the help of all of us, just like building our planes. I am proud of building a Zenith and having so many good friends in all of you. Subject: 601 Rudder Question
--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Mark's Mail" <bengel@bellsouth.net> I've just started a 601... beginning with the rudder. Please excuse a possibly stupid question... I was confused by one item. The plans show that the trailing edge skin of the rudder overlaps and is riveted to the leading edge skin leaving the open seam of the trailing edge skin facing into the airstream. This seems counter-intuitive. I always assumed small things add up when it comes to drag... am I being a little too anal here? Mark Bengel Stamping Ground, KY

--> Zenith-List message posted by: "Bill Steer" <bsteer@gwi.net> I'm assuming you're talking about the fairing piece below the top hinge, right? You'll find that in several places on the 601. Look, for example, at the overlap of the rear bottom skin on the aft fuselage. But Chris knows what he's doing, and claims that the drag caused by the skin overlapped in that fashion is less than that caused by the upstream skin being overlapped on top of the aft skin. The possibility of moisture entering skins overlapped in that manner is another matter, of course. If you're talking about figure 6T5, my plans show the leading edge skin on top of the aft skin. Hope this helps. Bill > I was confused by one item. I have seen the edge both ways in this situation. One of the arguments I heard on having the edge into the wind is that the airflow is bumped up over that edge and continues smoothly across the surface. If the edge is a drop off in the airstream the air can actually burble behind it similar to a sluice box for gold. Don't know if this is what ZAC had in mind or maybe its' just that the rudder just looks better this way. Jack Russell Ser#5000 xl on to ailerons

Subject: Lap joints of flat aluminum skins
--> Zenith-List message posted by: eldo <eldo@unb.ca> In this discussion of leading edges of skins facing into the airstream, I asked Chris the question many years ago. His response was that in fact the aerodynamics of the air flowing up and over the thin step produces smoother flow and less drag. One can think of a small wedge of stagnant air acting to smooth the air as it goes up and over the lip. Air "falling" behind a lip facing the other direction produces more turbulance and drag. Being a Civil Engineer and not an Aeronautical Engineer I'll have to take Chris' word on that. Advantages of lapping into or out of the airsteam are no doubt functions of airspeed and lap dimensions that produce variations of Reynolds and Froude numbers and all that good stuff I learned in fluid dynamics too many years ago. --> Zenith-List message posted by: Michel Therrien <mtherr@yahoo.com> Hello all! I'd like to know if anyone installed or plan to install a lock that would prevent (or at least try to influence) an auothorized visitor from opening the canopy (built as per the 601 XL plans). How did you (or do you plan to ) do that?
