I thought about putting a lock on my plane. I talked to another builder and
he convinced me not to bother. If someone wants to rip you off they will.
Do you want them to also destroy your $1500 canopy that took six months to
build in the process?

Has anyone found a guide for wiring the 701 with the 912S? Also, should I use a
master solenoid at the battery ? Worried about the idea that it has to be on
continuously. Thanks.

It's a tough call. A lock will keep the "almost honest" crook from
grabbing something because it was easy to get to. A determined crook
won't care if he has to do some damage to get to your stuff. I'm gonna
put some kind of lock on my canopy... and hope for the best.
Speaking of canopies, I just received mine from
http://www.aircraftextras.com/ yesterday.
I sent them a check for $375 2 weeks ago, and the truck showed up
yesterday with my package! Shipping was another $160, but I could have
saved $40 of that if I had picked it up at the loading dock instead of
having them make a residential delivery.

One alternative is to carry a small flight bag. I put my GPS, headsets and
such in it when I am out of town overnight. Don't leave them in the plane.

Ron,
You might take a look at the drawings available on the AeroElectric
connection at downloads.
Mr Nuckolls has provided a lot of guidance for this type of question. His
book is well recommended
and a great resource. The Aeroelectric connection has a site here that
might help on the rest.

Michel,
I'm looking at a small but loud security alarm will go off if someone
touches
the handle without the key. If you have it locked, you have insurance.
These are available at JCW for cars.

Or is there some "aviation" heatshrink I should be using. I was cleaning out

heatshrink so I end up getting another pack...)

For all "practical" purposes heatshrink is heatshrink. If you have the
variety that is thinwall (as opposed to some that "feels" thicker) just
shrink a piece over your area to be covered, then shrink another piece over
that. You may want to use a larger diameter for the second layer. Sometimes
Scotch 33 makes a good first layer.
You can also use the various colors of shrink to mark cables. This is useful
if you use the very good "welding lead cable" for primary battery cable. It
is almost always black in color, so both ends of the positive cable would
appreciate some red tape or red shrink. This will help prevent
opposite-polarity electrons from uniting to form smoke.

Michel,
Yes , I installed one on mine. I'm building a 601HD but I installed a
front tilting canopy. I know that if really wants to get in they can
break the canopy or for that matter come through the side with a can
opener. My concern is when I go to a fly-in or similar event I want to
be able to leave my "stuff" in the plane and not worry about someone
reaching in a helping themselves. Besides I'm also designing an
accessory that will let me lock it with it open about an inch.

On the question about the "master solenoid" -- Just remember that there are
"continous duty" and "intermittent duty" solenoids. Most of the continous
variety will just barely feel warm after 15 or 20 minutes. If in doubt/the
solenoid isn't marked/you can't be sure, hook it up on your workbench with a
fresh battery. A "starter" (intermittent-duty) solenoid will get warm PDQ.
And, if you happen to have a spare continous-duty solenoid that has the
current-carrying capacity you can use it for the starter. More overkill for
stocking replacement parts.

Hi Mark:
Eventually, the leading edge skin winds up over the trailing edge skin.
However, durning the assembly process, you'll need to place it under the
trailing edge skin temporarily so that you can back drill the holes in the
leading edge skin, using the trailing edge skin as a template.

Just curious -- have you fitted the canopy up against the fuselage yet?
Reason I ask is that while drilling the LAST hole in my canopy, the darn
thing cracked...so looks like I need to order another one. Not sure what
ZAC charges for just the bubble, but the one they supplied fit the
fuselage perfectly, with very little trimming required. I'm curious if
the one you bought fits the same.

Maybe a lock in the ascelerator, to prevent the complete plane to be
stolen, if used in ilegal acts will be lots of problem to proof you
out.
If the idea is to protect your instruments, is easy to destroy the
canopy or "can open" the front skins... is better to have an alarm
system in the plane or hangar.
I am planing to use an alarm system with a movility sensor conected to
one of those new battery "jumpers" from JC Wtihney so the little
battery in the plane is kept fresh. When I go flying will leave the
jumper charging in the airport office or conected to the cigarete
lighter of the car... Just an idea.

All,
I have been building the elevator on a 601xl, and I came to the end of
the directions - but I still have parts left. I can't find any
directions on how to install the servo or the trim tab, is it located
somewhere else in the manual? The only reference I see to it is in the
blue prints.
Thanks for the help,

Hi Michael,
Yes, that is the situation. If you have the aileron trim, the same
situation exists there to as there only drawing to refer to.

601 Elevator Trim instructions are in the builders pages on the ZAC site.
There are 2 versions. Under the XL Documents, there is a new PDF, with some
color photos of the trim tab, but no real instructions. Under the "regular"
601 online documents, there is an older 5 page pdf that has drawings and
instructions. These should be a good start in the right direction for you

Thanks Tim, this is the type of information I'm
looking for. Could you send me details of how your
doing this?
BTW, I recognize that if I want to open the canopy,
all I need is a screwdriver and push the lever
extension of the canopy latch from outside (on each
side)... easy, but not everyone that walk around the
plane in fly ins know that.

No, I haven't tried to fit it yet. I didn't expect it for another 2
weeks, so the turtledeck and forward skin aren't on yet. I did get to
talk to the guy in Florida who makes the bubbles and he said that he
left a couple extra inches of material around the edges. I'll let you
guys know how it fits in a couple more weeks.
When I called ZAC for a price, the quoted me $550 for the bubble, and a
$250 crating fee. I guess I can understand the price on the bubble, and
I wouldn't even mind paying a reasonable fee for packaging it... but
$250 just to put it in a box just seemed a little much. Still had to pay
the same for trucking, ~$150.

I completed my 601 rudder last week under the supervision of Sebastian and
Nick Heintz. I looked at the manual again and I see exactly where your
confusion is coming from. Section 6-T-5, Page 9 of 14, the bottom picture
shows the nose skin underneath the rudder skin which may have lead to your
confusion. I can see where you might think this is the way it will be
finally assembled - it's not. We were shown in the workshop that this is
installed exactly the opposite after trimming the nose skin 10mm from the
holes on each side (They have a nifty mega-dollar shear that makes a nice,
straight cut). I hope the following isn't too descriptive, but helps you
understand what you have to do.
After building the framework and fitting the skin and cleco-ing it into
place:
slide the nose skin under the rudder skin and drill and cleco on one side,
then the other just as the manual says. Be sure to mark the top for trimming
before taking it apart as mentioned in the manual. One word of caution -
before drilling the nose skin where it mates to the bottom nose rib, place a
small square inside to square the nose rib with the main spar.
Next take the entire assembly apart and here's the part where I think you
are now:
Remove the nose skin and draw a line from top to bottom on each edge 10mm
away from the holes you just drilled. Trim the excess away (outboard of your
line) so that you now have two edges 10mm from your holes. This will give
you two straight edges for final assembly that will be on the OUTSIDE of the
skin (this isn't explained very well in the manual) Be sure to use the duct
tape as mentioned in the manual.
Now after deburring everything, re-assemble the skin and cleco the skin
carefully to the framework working from the trailing edge to the front
leaving the nose-skin holes open.
Place the nose skin on the outside of the rudder skin and cleco in place.
This will give you the seam the way you want it where it won't catch any
wind. But here's one trick they taught me that may help you:
Cleco one side of the nose skin to the rudder (over the rudder skin), then
turn it over. Put a cleco in the middle hole (before bending it over the
frame) and push the nose skin over till the cleco goes in the corresponding
hole. This will give you a uniform bend and put it in place for riveting -
just to beat this dead horse one more time, the nose skin will be on top of
the rudder skin. Now cleco every other hole and rivet it into place.
Send me an email off line if you have questions about the above. I posted
this in case anyone else was at this same point and had the same question as
the assembly manual kind of leaves out the last step for the nose skin - it
says to cleco the nose skin to the spar, but it doesn't say to put it on the
outside. One valuable benefit of the workshop was the help from Nick and
Sebastian and Roger on this first step of building the airplane. Maybe you
should send them a short note that the manual doesn't make this very clear
and they could revise it. I suspect some rudders have been built with the
nose skin tucked under the rudder skin.
Take care,
Scott Laughlin

I've just started a 601... beginning with the rudder. Please excuse a
possibly stupid question...
I was confused by one item. The plans show that the trailing edge skin of
the rudder overlaps and is riveted to the leading edge skin leaving the open
seam of the trailing edge skin facing into the airstream. This seems
counter-intuitive. I always assumed small things add up when it comes to
drag... am I being a little too anal here?

Tim,
I suspect a few more of us might be interested in your set-up. Please post
it for all with photos if you can.
Thanks!

I'm not building a 601, (801) but I would suggest that a simple lock and a
cover that hides anything (including the panel) that might be attractive is
your best protection, "out of sight - out of mind". Most thieves won't
bother breaking into something unless they know there is something they
want.
