Try bending some sheet steel around the shoe of the bender and, leaving this
piece of steel in place, readjust the shoe to allow bending your aluminum.
With the steel sheet in place, you will have a larger radius to bend around.
Depending on how much adjustment is available, you can stack sheets around
the shoe to get any radius necessary.

Hi Scott:
Another thing you might want to try is to take a piece of maple, cut a 45
degree face on it and put a 1/8" radius on the nose with a router. Clamp
that in place instead of the aluminum angle and make your bends. It works
perfectly and you can keep the original piece intact in case you need to
bend a sharper corner on some sheet steel someday...
I made a larger bending brake out of wood and used the maple for it - see
http://www.murrayjohnson.com and go to the Tools section.

Just a preference, but I've never been impressed with fuel filters I can't
see
inside. I'd like to replace the fuel filter on my facet pump with a glass
tube
boat fuel filter, further upstream.
Is the facet pump likely to expeience any problems with this? Is the
existing
filter particularly fine?
I don't see the point of 2 filters in line so the facet filter will have to
go..
Thanks

I can't tell from the Grizzly picture. If the hold down piece is movable
and adjustable, take a file to it. Chris H. recommends it in his Zenith
brake plans.
If the piece can't be moved. Wrap it.

Trailering is very easy...Finding a trailer that is wide enough can be a
challenge. Its seems most of the large trailers that you can haul behind a
pick up are about 2" too narrow between the wheel wells.
Taking the wings off is about an hours work...too much to NOT keep you're
a/C at the airport I think.
I would not attempt to trailer it on its landing gear.

I like the see-thru filters too, but I prefer the plastic molded ones,
not the glass tube type. Ultralight airplanes were using them quite e
bit several years ago, but the glass tube types were prone to coming
loose and leaking fuel or sucking air. One more failure mode to deal
with.

My only experience was moving our 601 HDS from our home in the mountains to
the airport, some 60 miles away. 4" X 4" wood chocks were lag bolted to the
8' X 16" wooden trailer bed for the main gear, tail tiedown secured to rear
of trailer, and nose gear tied to front of trailer provided more than
adequate security for the aircraft. We could only get one wing in back of
the Suburban so had to make two trips to the airport to get the other wing
there. This would not be necessary with proper wing racks fabricated for
the trailer. One problem is raising the front of trailer high enough so
that tail does not scrape as you go up the ramp onto the trailer. A tilting
trailer bed would obviate this problem.
EAA chapter members cautioned against damage being caused by rough roads so
we drained all fuel out of nose tank and avoided any bumps. The aircraft
road very well up to 50 mph and we probably could have gone faster.
Loading the trailer and reattaching the wings is a two-man operation. A
well coordinated crew might be able to do the process either way in two hours
but our first on and off operations probably took at least 6 hours each.
The bottom line is that it could be done but would be very time consuming. =20
Rerigging the ailerons each time would require a test flight if it were a
certificated aircraft so that would be a good procedure to follow. Overall
I would not recommend it.

Recently there was a thread on squeezing/setting solid rivets, and several tools
and
approaches were discussed.
However, I haven't read anything on two alternatives that may or may not work:
The bench vise and the "C" clamp used as rivet squeezers.
Did anybody try these yet?

I've used an Flow-EZ all-metal filter that's considerably larger, 4-3/4" x 1-1/4",
than the glass toys seen on cheap outboards. I've never removed much debris
from it in 6 years of operation because I transfer 92 octane mogas from my
truck for most of my flying; I have a fuel filter on my truck pump. Even after
flying to OSH in 2001, where I had to use 100LL, I had almost no load of debris
to remove. During my annuals I pull the carb bowls and inspect them, of course.
I've never seen anything in the bowls, despite the fact I like Teflon pipe
tape as a sealant.
Consider the risk of high heat inside the cowl on the endseals of the little glass
dudes.

Thanks George,
I use a great water/debris trapping funnel into the jerry can and again
into the plane whe I fuel up.
My fuel line filter isn't in the cowl. It's on the inner fire wall just
underneath the front tank so heat
is not a problem. Again, in 100 hrs I've never had a drop of water or
anything, but the
glass filters I have in mind are "worth" enough to have refurbishment kits.
A friend of mine
has 2 and they haven't missed a beat in 400 hrs.
My main concern was whether the facet pump relies on the finer filtration
provided by the
metal filter it seems to come bundled with? Or is it more robust than that?
Looking at
these glass filters I'd say they were a little coarser.

I would not put any filter upstream of the pumps, just the fuel tank
strainer. If a filter upstream starts to clog, your pump will draw a vacuum
on the inlet line which can lead to vapor lock. Your pump can push fuel
through a partially clogged filter much easier than it can suck through one.
With a filter downstream of the pump, the fuel is always under pressure and
much less likely to vaporize in the line.

You will have to contact Zenith. I bought mine from Shirley at Zenith in
Mexico MO. about $20.00 but you can see, if not the same, a very simalar
48 inch set of brake plans at
http://www.vansairforce.org/tools/index.shtml
I also bought the 8 ft brake plans from our own Larry M. And they are a
great set of plans. It just looked to complicated for me to build.
I did end up building a 6.0ft brake that does a great job. the plans came
from a series of pictures from a Sonex builder. Not plans really. He built
a 10 ft version!!!!. I shortened it down to 6.0 ft. Costs about $80 and
took a weekend to build.. And I am really happy with it. So far there
isn't anything I haven't been able to bend on the 701 that I needed to.
But I haven't tried. the .040 longerons either. It will bend accurately 48
inch of .040. I haven't tried 6.0 ft. It will also make box bends as well,
with shorter pieces of angle iron. I bent up my wing tanks before I took
and had them welded.
Btw before you think I am full of it. Ian's brake doesn't look anything
like anyone elses brake. Its slow to operate, clumbersome to adjust. but
does a good job and is easy to build if you can weld 1/4 inch mild steel.
No machine work
I don't have Ian's link anymore but someone that knows about Ian or is
building a sonex might.?????
If you decide to go with Ian's brake, and are building a 701 need to make
it a little longer than 6.0ft. I believe (may be wrong) but the longest
piece we need to bend is the Elevator spar, and its longer than 6.0. When
It warms up. I am going to rebuild my brake so that it accepts this 701
piece.
Hope this helps.

I have been putting off building my 701 wing spars for over a year now.
HEY THEY ARE WING SPARS....someone said they were important. I wouldn't
know yet!!!! SO I didn't want to mess up those solid rivets, I am not
any good with an air rivet gun. LIKE NO GOOD PERIOD, dangerous in fact. :-)
BUT
found this article from the late Tony B. last month
http://members.eaa.org/home/homebuilders/authors/bingelis/
Metal Spar Assembly Tips
down near the bottom of the page.
Talks about making a hand set tool from an arbor press. I ordered 2
squeezer end sets. 1/8 and 5/32 for 8 dollars from the YARD STORE.
Drilled my 3 ton arbor press turn table. (hey its the one I had) And hand
set some rivets over the weekend. Works GREAT I MEAN GREAT!!!!!!!!,
how come no one told me about this a year ago!!!! I don't care what the
manual says you can't hit them da** rivets with a hammer, you have to use
a punch, and the 5th one I did it jumped off and nicked the alum angle!!!!!!
And btw when you order those squeezer end sets. Order their dog leg
deburring tool with end bit for $18. You will throw that other crap away.
I saw the deburrr tool on the wings channel about building an RV from the
groudn up.... who says watching TV is bad for you....

I just thought of a good example. monday Feb17th(?) a helicopter crashed
right in my home town here in Westford Ma. The pilot had to be HELPED out
of the wreck by some people who saw the crash. Then it caught fire.
Lessons learned,
#1- accidents are survivable
#2- You might not get out on your own
#3- it might burn
#4- do all you can to minimize the risks (duh!)

Hi Larry,
I wouldn't count on it being right at all. An avionics shop has the test
equipment to calibrate it and might be what you need to do. Some encoders
like the Rocky Mountain microEncoder will read the altitude being squawked
by the encoder. It will have to be certified every two years anyway. If
you ever use flight following or file IFR, you only get altitude plus or
minus 100 feet before violating regs, so if your encoder is even off 50
feet, it puts you at the edge of your assigned error. Even if you don't fly
into controlled airspace, the TCAS reporting system in commercial planes
will read your error and give evasive instructions to the pilot based on
your squawk altitude, not your real one.
Good luck

both from Aircraft Spruce for under $175.00.
